Taylor Heinicke and the 2019 draft

Its almost a given we are going to draft a QB this year, after Hurney left the depth chart bare.

There's a Lot of talk from some such as @Jeremy Igo on Twitter that we should draft another QB in rounds 1-2

The Colts traded away a their former first round pick WR for a backup QB because the Uncertainty of Luck.  Luck missed half a season.  Came back and wasnt right similar to Cam.  Then he sat out a whole entire season, now he is having a career year.

Now......................................What if Taylor comes out and looks good?

What if Taylor Heinicke comes out this weekend looking solid and lead us to a W.

What if Taylor Heinicke goes onto New Orleans and has another good game

Would you be comfortable enough to not panic and throw away a round 1-3 pick at QB? And be patient with Cam atleast another season?

If we're patient and Cam just doesnt retern to normal and its another season like last year or this year?  Cams contract could ride out and we could package up ala Philly with Wentz and draft that franchise QB once we're 100% sure?

if in the next two games, he looks like a decent backup QB....I don't think we need to reach or add a QB in the 2019 draft just to be adding one.  It is a weak QB class in general.  Pick likely better used elsewhere in terms of the first 4 rounds.

There’s Herbert, Lock and maybe Grier round one.  This doesn’t seem like a good QB class but those sometimes are the onesies that end up producing a random starter or two in the mid rounds. Finley would make some State fans happy though I’m unsure of him and Daniel Jones. The buffalo and northwestern guys are interesting.

You guys do know this guy is the only healthy QB on the roster, right?

The only reason Cam isn't on IR today is because there's nobody else but Heinicke. If Heinicke were to get injured in one of these last 2 games, Cam will be on the field, regardless of how hurt he may be.

If Carolina were to find an emergency QB to sign in the next couple days (Colin K), you might see Cam on IR.

Going forward, this team will likely go back to a 3-QB roster with a medically uncertain starter in Cam Newton

We only ever carry 2 QBs on this roster

So drafting a QB and Cam not being on IR next year puts Heinicke on the practice squad for anyone to grab

I getthe thought we should keep 3 QBs, but thats just not Ron

Not until last season (2017) did the Panthers drop to a 2-QB roster. Prior to that, you're forgetting Joe Webb was the #3; before that was Armanti Edwards... and so on.

They were drafted as QBs and were listed on the official roster as QBs, although they played other positions, obviously. The current roster does not have anyone who played QB at the college level behind Heinicke.

Web and Edwards were WRs/return guys who happened to be able to play QB.

Thats the only reason we got one.

We could bring a Terrelle Pryor by that means as a 3rd QB

I figured we’d get murdered last week and we lost a heartbreaker so while some think we’ll lose a heartbreaker Sunday I think we’ll get murdered. Heinicke doesn’t have an NFL arm. He just doesn’t. It’s nice and all to want him to lead us to a win, absolutely, but I’ve said for more than a month that the next Panthers win will be in the next year with a new coach and I’m sticking to it.

What 2nd round or later QB has ever come in their rookie season and lit it up? It’s hard enough to find a rookie who can contribute in the first round.

If the right developmental guy comes at some point after the first then I’d be ok with drafting one, but I’d start Heinicke before I trusted the idea of a rookie QB coming in and leading us to the playoffs and that’s assuming Cam won’t be back to his normal self next year.

Cam Newton hasn't had an NFL arm this season either.  I actually think that we'll be more of a downfield threat on Sunday with Heinike than we've been at any time this year.

As far as the draft goes, you only take a QB if you really believe in him.  It's such a hit and miss thing.  Now, if we have a QB we believe in, then yes, take him.  Even if Cam comes back next year healthy, he's 30.  We'd be blessed to get another 4 years out of him the way he plays the game.  It's time to at least start LOOKING for the next QB.
