Not going to say it's right, and the Panthers would be an attractive job...but I also think we're kidding ourselves if Tepper didn't know 1/4 of the league would have job openings, and firing Rivera would mean A LOT of competition for HC candidates which could've left us with our 3rd or 4th choice.

It sucks right now...but giving Rivera another year may weirdly end up being beneficial to our long term plan. (Trying to talk myself into this)

Even if Tepper was considering letting go of Rivera, I wonder if the number of openings created today would give him pause.

I gotta think Carolina would be high up on any coach's wish list. Pretty much every team with a vacancy right now is a complete rebuilding effort with a high probability of getting canned. The Panthers are a legit championship contender within 2 years.

That won't change next year.  There will be 5 or 6 teams at least looking for new coaches next season.  It's always been that way.

Rivera would have a new gig by Friday if he was available.

Looking ahead to next head year, it’s plausible that the Panthers, Steelers, Vikings, Giants, Redskins, and Jaguars could be looking for a new coach but it’s possible that two or so of the teams above could also be in the playoffs.

Competing with four other teams for a HC and eight other teams for a HC seems a little smarter than canning Rivera to hire Joe Blow from Isothermal Community College because all of the top candidates were already hired.

Are we though?  Right now I would think we look like a team with big question mark whether our starting QB will be ready to start the season or play at all next season.  I mean Luck just missed what 2 seasons because of a throwing shoulder problem.  He came back strong.  Hopefully Cam comes back strong quicker.  Outside coaching options probably are not going to have medical information on Cam's shoulder.  Doesn't scream potential championship contender in 2 years to me.

This... a team with minimal cap space, a busted up QB, multiple holes on defensive and offensive side of the ball, and the 16th pick in the draft. We’re not exactly the prized pig at the fair.

I'd look at the quarterback situation of each team.

You've got one complete unknown (Tampa), three rookies (Mayfield, Darnold, Rosen), one all pro (Rodgers), and three JAGs (Dalton, Keenum, and Tannehill).

Depending on Cam's true health, I'd put our QB situation has high as third (behind Rodgers and Mayfield) and no worse than 4th (depending on how you feel about Darnold).
