Can Jermaine Carter seize the opportunity???

The info and link below has a great article from Panthers.com with good video breakdown of Jermaine Carter, on his potential, and how he ended his rookie year on a high note. He could potentially take Shaq’s old spot being that Shaq will start with TD our of the picture. If Carter becomes a solid player, Marty Hurney officially had an outstanding draft last year (feelings aside). I can’t wait to see how Carter does next year.

“Carter was a tackling machine at the University of Maryland, leading the Terrapins in tackles for three consecutive seasons. It appears the Panthers got a steal in the draft when they selected him in the fifth round.”

“He’s a three-down player. You don’t have to take him off the field,” Russ said. “His play speed stands out to me, and he has very, very good natural instincts and a very high football IQ.”

“He can retain information. He can pick up information. And he also can take that to the football field. Sometimes with rookies there’s a disconnect at some point in that supply chain, but he connects the dots very well and he works hard at it.”

Russ also likes Carter’s toughness and physicality, and both noted that he has some pass-rush ability that he didn’t get the chance to show as a rookie. At Maryland, Carter recorded 9.5 sacks.

As for the physical part of the equation, the self-described “football junkie” has decided to hang around Charlotte for his winter workouts.

If he can fill Shaq’s role and Smith can be depth instead of Mayo, all we need to do is extend Shaq a couple years to spread his cap hit this year and our linebackers should be set for a while. Moore, Jackson, Thomas and the potential of Carter, Gaulden and Smith is making out to be a great draft class!

He did...He screws up when he starts trading during he draft.  I can't think of too many good trades he has made---did he not trade up for Haynes? Still not seeing that.

yeah he made a trade with the L.A. Rams in last year's draft moving up from the 5th to the latter part of the 4th in order to draft Haynes if my memory serves me well.

it's been one season. things point to well now but 3-4 years from now we could look back and be like that's a hurney draft.

    • I feel the same way. Bryce hasn't proven himself to be so good that he would clearly lap anyone that we'd bring in the compete for the starting job. I think the team is actually afraid to do that. If Bryce goes down does anyone think Kenny Pickett is solid option to replace him?. We can control him for 2026 and 2027. The problem is 2028. Unless he takes a massive leap forward ability wise, I don't see how Carolina can justify paying B.Y. $50 million a year. So far, Bryce has not shown that he can CONSISTENTLY carry a team. He needs to be carried by a strong offensive line, running game, pass catchers and a respectable defense. If he's lacking any of those things I don't think we can make the playoffs in 2026/2027 unless the NFC South is as bad (or worse) than 2025. Unfortunately, athletes and agents have EGOs! When he has a chance for a 2nd contract his management team will probably insist on a "market deal" and feel insulted if they don't get one. That leaves a couple of options if his play hasn't significantly improved. 1) Let him walk and test the market. 2) Franchise him for the 2028 season if you're still not sure about what to do. 3) Extend him to a team friendly deal that pays him below the "current market" which would allow the team to continue to build a solid team to support him. 4) Over pay him and pretty much ruin any chance of becoming a consistent contender. The last option is the LEAST DESIRABLE ONE. The 2026 season is a pivotal season for Bryce and the Carolina Panthers. The success of the next 5-7 years could ultimately be decided on how well plays the next 2 seasons.
    • Thank god BigKat can't buy it because I'd be gone immediately
    • Drake Maye ended up putting almost 300 on them lol. Bryce was stunned from the beginning to end. I know that's an easy comp for the Bryce truthers but no one else put up those puny QB stats against them all season long.
