What FA WR do you want (and we can afford)

Ok, at this point I think we all understand that picking up the option on Torrey Smith is basically an insurance policy until we find someone better (unless MH is a moron, which is certainly debatable). We can cut him whenever and keep the $5M. My question is this...What FA would you sign? There are obviously some that would awesome, but out of our price range, and some that would be dead weight. According to OTC, we still have $12.2 M in cap space, counting Smith. Here's a link to the FA tracker:

I'd like to target Jordan Matthews from Philly. He's young (26), big (6'3", 215), and should be available at a low price (played last year on a 1 year $739K contract). From 2014 - 2016, he was pretty dang good, 872, 997, and 804 yards and 19 TD's. Granted, he hasn't done poo for the last 2 years, but if he can get back close to those first 3 years he could be a good fit here.

I really wanted Matthews when he was coming out of Vandy, but honestly he's basically a Funchess clone. If you wanted Funchess gone, you don't want Matthews. Honestly, if we're carrying Smith this year I'd rather just look for a WR in the mid-late rounds.

I still think that Smith is just on the roster until we find a replacement. I'd be fine with a Funchess clone provided 2 things. We sign at $1M - $1.5M instead of $10 M, and he's behind DJ, Samuel, and Wright in the pecking order. He's a big, cheap guy with potential.

I'm done with WRs with inconsistent effort and even more inconsistent hands. I'd honestly rather have Bersin on the roster. At least the guy actually catches balls thrown his direction.

You know, that's actually not a terrible shout.  Bersin is 6'3", he's not going to take time away from our ascending stars, from all reports was a great locker room guy, and as you said, he does catch the ball.  In a WR room with Funchess and KB, Bersin was just more of the same.  In a room with Samuel, Moore and Wright, he does offer something a little different.

Honestly, if it's a question of Damiere Byrd or Brenton Bersin . . . I almost think the answer might be Bersin.  That's scary.

HaHa would be nice.

Ryan Grant as the funchess replacement or JJ Nelson as the speedster to replace smith. Both should be cheap and could bring something to the wr group.

Grant showed some flashes w washington and early w Indy. He is only 6ft so 4 inches shorter than funchess on paper and 3 inches taller than funchess on he field.

If they are big enough for a 4-3, Steve McClendon or Brandon Mebane to plug a hole as a backup DT for a year. If not, then then Sylvester Williams.

thats it. Then draft the poo out of DE, OT , OG

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
