Best Left Tackle ever?

Mr. Scot

Probably Ogden but man, how fat of a contract would you dole out to any of these guys we are talking about?

There is something so pleasing about watching how easy those elite LTs make, what we know to be a tremendously difficult chore, seem.

I’ll give a recency-bias-honorable-mention to Peters. Maybe the best that is currently on a roster. Watching him is the best part of an eagles game by far. Great technique and seems to always be performing at a high level despite nagging injuries.

Thomas is a different guy. You knew he was different when he chose to go fishing with his dad the day he was drafted rather than be in New York for what everyone said would be one of the biggest moments of his life.

Over the last few years of his career, there was a lot of chatter about him getting traded to a better team (almost as a favor to him). But from what I've heard, he never started any of that talk himself. Even to this day, he's loyal to the Browns organization.

Definitely... different.

Man, it really is a shame that Joe Thomas got wasted on the 2000s Browns. What a terrible franchise.

And another reminder that OL are facilitators. They help you get the most out of your skill positions. But, if your skill positions are trash... well, they're still trash.

Boselli played with immense raw power. Erik Williams was superb—Reggie White feared him.

Ogden is the best I’ve evaluated in my lifetime. Almost 6’10”, played with incredible agility and leverage, and would maul elite DL and LB in the run game. Paved the way for an underrated rushing attack in 2000. Tenacity, availability, leadership.

This ccvers it.

Others worth mentioning:

Joe Jacoby, Redskins 1981-1993

Jon Kolb, Steelers 1969 - 1981

Mike Ken, Falcons 1978 - 1994

Art Shell, Raiders 1968 - 1982

Jacoby and Russ Grimm together...yikes.

Those two could have pushed a mountain out of the way.

One thing I have noticed is that great tackles have long careers. It may be a feature of the position that great play at the position is only noticed over many years as there's just not a sexy stat attached to it. Greatness is determined by nothing happening on your watch, or by the results of the passing and running games you've helped shore up.

The O-line is the most unsung group in football, but at least the pay and food are good there.

Great tackles are exceptional athletes.  Those exceptional guys do tend to stick around for a while, and remain somewhat injury free for the job.

The Moss's, Peppers's, etc...
