We have like what..16..17m in cap space to work with?

And first year cap hits are usually small since the bulk of their money is the signing bonus  and a small first year base salary. His cap hit could be as little as 7 million this year.

Heres some juice

1. Like basically the whole Panther team McCoy is a big superhero fan. He's got TONS of memorabilia along with a Batman theme Rolls Royce. Panthers need a batman after having Superman, Spiderman, Captain America, Thor etc.

2. New coach Bruce Arians was not a fan of McCoys' mentality at all. McCoy has always been very polite to the enemy team during the game. Giving words of encouragement, helping up players, etc.

3. Lastly, Bruce (who may leave at any point) didn't think McCoy would be a fit in the 3-4 defense.  Panthers are adding that element to the D and will play the Bucs at least 2 per year.

Panthers has many former players living in/around the queen and along with the bits above have plenty to offer McCoy.

Good stuff. And McCoy has always been a Cam fan, always said positive things about him.

Just to even get a meeting is a positive sign for a franchise moving forward. We would have never made this type of move with JR as the owner. Tepper is really going after the bigger names since his short stint at owner.

Hopefully we sign McCoy he can really help our defense. People forget just a few years ago he was the best DT in the game. Even now he is still a impact player, and on our Dline he would probably be our best player.

I'm not saying that we need a prime Earl Thomas back there, but at the same time, prime Earl Thomas is what allowed the rest of that Legion of Boom secondary to do what they did.

and vice versa

he had exceptional talent with him in the secondary that rarely left him out to dry. Pressure was put on the QB, CBs knocked their man off course and stayed on them. He was allowed to let his skills shine plucking the ball out of the air. He had that confidence knowing his didn't have to make up and compensate for some other position lacking on the defense. Everyone else on that defense did their job and did it at an elite level allowing him to do his specific job. that defense fed off of each other

i feel a huge part of our woes in the secondary especially at FS was that position was asked to do too much. Pass rush wasn't there. BAD defensive playcaller. Threat of the run. that saftey net needed to be more than that to compensate for other other deficiencies.

Im hopeful for gaulden, because as a green 3rd round rookie, he had a lot of responsibility with very little help. QBs had all day to throw, balls going deep, he had a whole lot of volume coming his way before he could truly settle in to the speed and nuance of the NFL. Gaulden is a confident and fiery guy who out of lack of experience, tried to do too much and got out if position.

Norman wasnt a top pick and was also a confident fiery guy who often tried to do too much and found himself out if position early in his career.  Im glad he stuck around and had a opportunity to learn from his mistakes.

Im hoping with gaulden, he gets an opportunity to learn from his mistakes, but also get an opportunity to play with a competent supporting cast.  Jackson, Bradberry, and Reid arent chumps.. and neither would our elite front 7 with Mccoy in the mix.. not to mention Rivera finally taking the reins and calling plays like he did for his ELITE chicago and san diego defenses

Im not a betting man, but i feel the stars are aligning for the perfect archetypical "buy low" on a guy. if i could pick the next guy people sshit on to came out of nowhere and ball out, it would be Gaulden.  Anyone can look back and see what was, but not everyone can make accurate predictions, especially the the ones that aren't obvious  the "sleeper" predictions

Gaulden is my sleeper.

And I think he is Hurneys too.  Anyone can make obvious decisions. Great GMs make a living taking huge risks through adversity and outside heat where not so obvious sleeper picks actually pan out and those risks end up with great reward

its a risk to throw Gaulden out there as the starter. It could burn us bad. But with the limited resources we have, if we can put those limited rescources into the right places, and have our risks turn into rewards with good production for little cost, thats how games are won. At least until its time to pay those players that are a boom for the buck and you cant pay everyone  (seattle)

with limited resources, you put those resources into the critical positions you absolutely need. Not only for our team, but the whole NFL, defensive lineman and pass rushers get paid astronomically more than safeties. Theres a huge discrepancy for supply and demand between the two positions. Because with a great DL who can stop the run and rush the passer, you dont need a world beater back there as your safety net. In fact, a good supporting cast can make an average safety look good by not needing him to do too much

    • I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.
    • I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
    • I think the D performed well over the season considering it was put together with Scotch tape.
