I have been a bit disappointed that the Haynes enthusiasm has not received more attention.  Yes, we all mentioned that he had a good game and all that, but I really do not think we knew what we had last year as he was hidden in the 4-3.  He has a lot of potential.

He is older than you probably think, turning 26 in December.  That means his future is now.  At Ole Miss, he had 17.5 sacks in just 16 starts, so he knows how to get to the QB.  There is no reason to think this 3-4 alignment is not perfect for him and that he cannot contribute as a fourth OLB (Irvin, Burns, Addison).

As Irvin is on a one-year deal and he  and Addison are showing signs of aging,  Burns and Haynes seem poised to take over as the pass threats next year.   If Miller can develop, it would be a huge plus. 

Personally, I am very excited about the few "surprises" so far;  Elliot, for example, locking down the nickel role.  Haynes showing signs of readiness.  Samuel rising from a neat novelty to a potential superstar.  Manhertz is quietly having a great camp.  Allen making strides as a backup QB.  If the left side of the OL gets it together, I really do not see much weakness on this roster.

And as a fourth DE/OLB that is fine.  Good point--he will never be the starting DE/OLB, but we could use a pass rushing specialist.

Remember Addison was regarded the same way initially...and he’s developed into a pretty complete player IMO. Who better to mentor Haynes?

I think we are all excited, but want to see it translate into a real game before we get our hopes up that he will replace Irvin/Mario. I still think he will continue to build on his frame this year and hopefully he balls out, and can step into a larger starting role next year if he performs.

He may hold up against the run. 3-4 gives you different leverage than a 4-3 as DE/OLB. App was playing guys who were 200 lbs at OLB against Georgia in the year of UGA's National Title run and held their running game to the lowest total rushing yards that season.

It's about scheme. With Rivera as play caller on defense, I wouldn't expect him to pull Haynes purely based on if it's 3rd and 11 or 2nd and 20.

Definitely tough to not get excited, but it was a single preseason game.  With that being said, I think the most positive takeaway is the fact that you see progression.  That tells you a player is buying into the system and once you can get over that hurdle, you can really begin to see results on the field.

This i dont know either, no one mentioned at all prior to last week preseason game

 

Sirius XM NFL station was traveling around to different camps the past few weeks.  They were at Panthers camp last week a few days prior to the game.  They were raving on Haynes and talking about how he was creating buzz among the staff.  While no one else mentioned him.   Then he went on to have that nice game.  Everyone talked about him for a day then back to silence

      Can we get to 9-8?

      A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.

      I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.

      Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
