If we have a new coaching staff, then we're rebuilding.

That scenario doesn't really lend to keeping older / injured players around.

Why would you say that? Do you think coaches want to go into their first season obviously tanking?

Teams that change coaches generally do so because they were bad the prior year.

New coaches come in with the understanding that they're building from the ground up.

It's not tanking. It's understanding that you're not likely to turn everything around in one year.

This isn't the old NFL though. Coaches aren't given much of a chance. What's the current average on a new coaches lifespan, without a good quarterback, something like 1.8 years?

There was always going to come a time when Newton wasn't gonna be able to play anymore. And the NFL being the way it is, it was always way more likely that it would end on a low note rather than a high one. The number of guys who go out in a blaze of glory is extremely low.

Is that time now? I don't know. I do know there are an awful lot of signs pointing in that direction.

Bottom Line: It's either gonna happen or it wont. All the message board spinning in the world won't change that.

Said it elsewhere and will say it here: I won't blame Newton the least little bit if he retires. He's got enough money to be set for life as long as he spends it wisely. And in my opinion, he doesn't have anything to prove.

The one thing people will point to is lack of a Super Bowl ring, but I could name you a load of other great players who don't have one.

I'd love to see a happy ending as much as anybody, but forty plus years of watching the NFL has taught me not to expect one.

So here is what I want to see going forward.  And we don’t have to wait to miss the playoffs.

We need to get more playing time for some players.

Stop running CMC into the ground.  Bonnafon should get 5 touches an game and Scarlett also needs about 5 touches per game.

Ian Thomas needs to get some reps.  Let him learn slowly and get a target or two.

Dortch needs to return punts and get a couple snaps in the slot.  Jarius isn’t gonna last forever.

Gaulden needs to....  wait fug that.

See what you have with Carter in Shaqs role if game is out of reach.  Need to see if he could fill his spot if we can’t resign Shaq.

Once the playoffs are out of reach play Grier.  We need to know exactly what we have there going into next year.  If he puts up some good tape he could be trade bait if Cam comes back next year.  If not see if we need to draft a QB.

All of this can be implemented without going full tankathon.  Other teams find a way to play their young guys.  We like to wait until their rookie contracts are up before we try to decide what we have.  This season is gonna have to be a full team effort.  So let the young contribute to the cause.
