What if RR goes and Hurney stays

Hurney has certainly shown very different tendancies in this go around as our GM.  A couple more years of this and he's likely to be seen as a legit GM in his own right.  It certainly appears that JR was having a much greater hand in personnel decisions than was made obvious at the time.

Honestly I say clean house. If we lose Rivera that means that we don't make the playoffs and we most likely don't have a winning record. That would be yet another non-winning season on Hurney's resume, and that's not great.

In my personal opinion with the value of hindsight, Hurney has too many one year deals on quality starters this year, instead of 1 year "Prove it" deals like Gettleman used to do with mid-tier/lesser known commodities that he identified as potential fits for our system. Specifically with Irvin, McCoy, Boston, and (to a lesser extent) Daryl Williams. Most if not all of those guys are going to want long term deals this offseason, but who of those can we afford to keep in addition to Bradberry AND Shaq? Half of our defensive starters are set to be free agents next year (including Mario Addison), and that's poor asset planning for the future (in my opinion at least).

This doesn't include guys like Cockrell, Butler, Love, and Obada who have proven to be quality depth for us this year.

Not to mention the two long term deals that he actually did give out to Reid and Paradis last offseason have kind of been flops so far.

We've seen 14 years of Marty Hurney as GM. It peaked in 2003. It's way past time we moved on.

I was very anti-Hurney in the past and thought it was ridiculous when he was brought back, but I've changed my tune - probably because Hurney has changed his.

He's a better GM than he was before, and I don't have any real complaints. I'd like to see him stick - as unbelievable as that would have been for me to say in the past. Seriously, I can't believe I'm saying that, lol.

    • I'm super excited about the guys we're getting back, and fortunately this year, outside of Robert Hunt, we haven't had any season-threatening injuries. Rico has earned the start, but I am excited to have both available.  The team is finally turning into the run-first team Canales said he wanted to be. As for JT Sanders, I think he has lost the most be being out. He is probably our best receiving TE, but with the emergence of Mitchell Evans & with him and Tommy Tremble both absolutely balling in run blocking, it will be hard to fix something that isn't broken. I'm hoping Turk Wharton can help with our pass rush. We really havent gotten to see him much due to injuries, but we desperately need anyone to provide some pass rush juice, which is what he was brought to do. I'm the most excited about Jalen Coker returning. Theilen may have been the most clutch last year, but I've watched a lot of film, and Coker was the most consistent WR we had when he was out there last year.  I think he can be an ideal #2 to Tmac. While Coker doesn't have the raw athleticism XL does, his route running, savvy, and overall football IQ simply make him better.  I think with the fact Coker can play both outside and in the slot will give our pass game more versatility.  We have been running a lot of 2 TE sets, and I think Tmac & Coker should be the primary WRs for 12 personnel. The other WRs (XL, Tremayne, Renfrow, & Horn) all have roles, but I dont think any of them can fully replace what Coker can do. I do think Renfrow will be inactive this week if everyone is healthy bc of how valuable Tremayne is for ST and as a run blocker. So happy that we are playing meaningful football heading into November. We are still almost certainly a year away, but we are absolutely moving in the right direction
    • Better than a fragile starter, though
