The Athletic reports that Marty Hurney will stay on as GM, and is negotiating contracts for Bradberry and Boston

The guaranteed money in Thompson’s contract isn’t bad at all.  Besides, the market will show that his contract was actually pretty good.

I hope you are right. I am just not sure I buy into having $25-30 mil/year tied up in two LB's is where I am not quite on board.

Marty is still here because he is going to be the person to implement his vision.  Who to draft, who to activate on game day and what the coaches do.  That way he can meddle and run the team without being the face of the failure.

and this is precisely why tepper is an garbage owner

Do you understand what happened? He wasn't a free agent. He was under contract. A contract inked by Gettleman. Hurney took that contract and converted base salary to bonus creating more guaranteed money in the deal and greatly reducing our cap flexibility to create additional cap space immediately. This is a big part of how he created such a cap mess in his first tenure.

I do.  A lot of players get new deals prior to becoming free agents.  That’s the NFL.

If that’s the case than we overpaid for Luke as well.  The entire defense was bad this season.  Shaq did his part and played hard.  He was 100 times better than Eric Reid, who some people think should be making double what he is.

Who are these people that think Reid should be making double?

What are you taking about? He was and isn't scheduled to enter free agency until after the 2021 season.

Marty’s move simply created cap space that can be rolled into next year.  Short wasn’t going anywhere.  The restructure simply allowed us a little more room to sign priority free agents.

Question: if Hurney wasn’t involved in the coach search, who else would be?? Tepper and who other football people? Of course Hurney is involved. But make no mistake this is Tepper’s final decision.

some owners hire outside committees to give them a list of potential candidates and go from there

Marty had a first round grade on Will Grier. He had him rated higher than Kyler Murray.

This is one of those really silly things I keep hearing repeated, that you should know better than.

Literally after every draft, teams put out spin on all of their picks and say they were 'highest on the board', 'we had a first ground on him';  it's typical GM speak, and fans of 31 other franchises know to not take it seriously.  I can find you dozens of quotes from every draft where some executive talks about how some mid round pick was their favorite guy all along.

But Panthers fans have such an irrational animosity towards Hurney, they actually take these things literally.   If Hurney actually had Grier rated above Murray, he would have traded back into the 1st round to select him, or taken him in the 2nd.  He's never been one to gamble on waiting patiently for a prospect to fall into his lap.

People lose all sense of logic and objectivity when discussing Hurney.  Not only must Hurney be criticized for poor moves he made, they must also invent fictional moves or motives to justify their hatred.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
