The Case to draft a QB at #7

This will rile up the nut huggers, but it is an exercise in multiple perspective taking, a form of intelligence that permits one to consider alternatives to his or her own bias in a search for truth over appeasement.  So stop frothing and read this with an open mind, understanding that no decision is smart unless all options have been considered before making it. I like the case made here, by the way, but do not know that this is what I would do.

First, the only QB worth taking at #7 would be Tua (assuming Burrow is gone).  Personally, I think he is coming out (will announce Monday) and I would be shocked if he managed to slip by the Dolphins (5) and Chargers (6).  However, free agency can change a lot of scenarios.  . Tagovailoa completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 33 touchdowns and three interceptions in nine games. How do you let that go by?

 

If you noticed, Tua is LEFT HANDED.  That puts our best OL on his blindside---suddenly, we do not need an elite LT.  Now we can develop Little (as God intended) and find a G and/or C.  So drafting Tua eliminates the paranoia about LT.  It is almost a "no brainer" because we address needs at the game's top 2 positions with one pick.

A healthy Cam in 2020 is still a 31-year old running QB in a contract year.  He will seek a lucrative deal, probably in the $35m range. Nobody wants to see Cam replaced this way, but if you put your business hat on, his health concerns and salary demands put all of the risk on the Panthers if they commit to him.  Tepper knows risk. Doing that during a "rebuild" makes little sense.  A healthy Cam is worth $20m if he is developing Tua, but once he becomes a free agent, I do not see a third contract in the cards.  Would it be smarter to draft Tua and trade Cam?  To me, if Tua is there, the dilemma about Cam is, "do you want to trade him now or keep him for a year at $21m?"

The Cam supporters will argue, "Yeah, but what about 2015 and he has looked good when healthy.  How many games is that, dating back to 2017?  If you are the owner, Cam's health has cost your season ticket holders 2 seasons worth of hard-earned season passes, parking, etc.  Even if Cam gets a clean bill of health, how long will that last?  Sure, no player is guaranteed a clean bill of health, but Cam's playing style has led to him being hit more than any other QB in NFL history.  He takes on contact and leaps into the air over piles of defenders.  Did the QBs in the NFL playing after 35 years of age do that?  Which ones?  Cam may have a year or two or three left, but ultimately, we are going to need a QB. 

Ideally, what better scenario than to draft Tua and let him play behind Cam for a year?  Or what better scenario than to draft a QB and have him on a rookie contract for four years while you use the money you would have spent on Cam to rebuild the team?  Do we really need a $21m QB when we are rebuilding?  Keeping Cam is a romantic, emotional idea more than a practical one.  Get mad at that comment, but if Tua is somehow there, he makes a lot of sense.

That is the best argument I can make for Tua at #7.

You are getting ahead of me Fua! I think Jeudy is better than the other 2.  Everyone who passes on him will look back in 5 years and question why they did not take him---

I find myself agreeing with your opinion more than others lately.. I can see getting the best WR or CB as a path of improvement just like getting another hog Mollie..

This is my argument, not my opinion, but I get what you are saying.  My point is--we have many needs--to focus on the OL is to neglect the other needs--at least in discussions.  We should be considering DBs, DTs, OTs, QBs, etc as we look forward---before free agency---none of this will matter afterwards.  And I thought everyone agrees with me---this is a bit shocking.

Maybe because the same type of injury ended the career of one of the greatest athletes this country has ever seen in Bo Jackson.

And, doesn't it make perfect sense to draft a QB after a major surgery to replace a QB who just underwent a major surgery?

Not sure I could pass on tua tagovailoa if he declares and is at 7. But I dont work in professional sports.

Even if Tua declares, there is no way he makes it past Dolphins AND Chargers.  He's not special enough to mortgage future drafts by moving up.

So this case is a moot point.

Oh, Burrow won't even have his seat warm at the draft before his name is called.
