The picks can be traded as well.  They are valuable capital.

So Luke's value will not kick in until next year?

Luke will not count.  He retired.  It's treated as though we cut him.  The player has to be signed by another team for him to count in the compensatory pick formula.

If you aren't getting any, you aren't doing your job right as a GM.

Completely disagree.  The two have zero correlation.

Assume you draft really well - good players, players like your organization and want to stay.  Take team friendly deals to do so.  You get zero comps . . . and that's not doing your job?

Assume you draft really poorly - players you want gone.  You're forced to sign FA's off the market to cover for it.  You get zero comps.

Comp picks have zero correlation to doing your job or not doing your job as a GM.

If you have a lot of other teams valuing your outgoing players that come available, it absolutely means that your team both drafted well, and coached them up....while continuing to draft well and replace those outgoing (overpriced) free agents.

The top 4 since the 1994 season when the comp picks were started are the Ravens, Cowboys, Packers, and Pats.

3 of the 4 are consistent winners in the NFL, the other was at one point, but has come back to Earth in the last 10 years...and before we start laughing at the Boys being there....they have been to the playoffs exactly 1 less time than us in the last decade.

Nothing for Olsen ?

We won't get much.

The biggest portion of deciding what comp pick you get is the size of the contract signed by the player after leaving your team, and your choosing to not bring in any additional free agents.

Think Peppers leaving for Chicago, or Norman leaving for WAS., those give you good comp picks, not the lower cost guys that leave.

I think it would figure into next years comp anyway.  With him being cut, im not sure we would get a comp

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
