Fun fact: you can make this thread about almost every other pick taken after Clausen in the second round outside of Golden Tate, Carlos Dunlap, or Sean Lee.

Jason Worilds was pretty good.  He's the kid that was due for a big contract and surprisingly retired.

I remember going to a game of Saints vs Bengals and I couldn't believe how big Carlos Dunlap is.  He's one of those guys that you can look at his size stats on the web and watch him on TV, but its hard to appreciate it until you see him in person.

Sooooo......Herbert or Love to deliver a second #1 pick?

Why? We had Clausen in Grier. With what we saw last year, Grier would have guaranteed us the #1 pick. With a D giving up 30 a game and a QB who only gets us 6 points every other game, I think mathematically our odds at 0-16 would be 99.98%. Also, let’s not forget Weinke who Clausened us into Peppers. Both of them did their jobs amazingly well and I dare say that Grier would have made them proud.

Javier Arenas was a decent player too.

Looking at the rest of the draft makes me ill....taking Donald LaFell 5 picks before Emanuel Sanders. Trading up to take Armanti Edwards 2 picks ahead of Navarro Bowman and 6 picks ahead of Jimmy Graham. Drafting Eric Norwood 9 spots ahead of Kam Chancellor.

Hindsight GM's out in force today I see.

Look, Clausen was terrible.  No argument.  However, at the time he was picked, things like this were being said:

It wasn't his personality or leadership skills that failed, dude just couldn't play.  All this shows is that QB is the ultimate wildcard position.

I was never a Jimmy fan, even when they were hyping him up as a "kid."  They talked about how advanced he was relative to his peers.  Well no poo he's "advanced," he's older than them.  He was pushing 20 when he left high school. LOL

Mel Kiper loved him some Clausen...

Quote

While most people viewed Clausen as a second round pick, Kiper had him as the fourth best player in the entire draft.

People were quick to point out that Kiper’s rankings might be biased because of his friendship with Clausen’s agent, Gary Wichard — something Kiper scoffed at.

Kiper was so confident in his analysis of Clausen that he had this infamous exchange with ESPN foil Todd McShay:

Kiper: “If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I’m done. That’s it. I’m out.”

McShay: “What is your time frame, Mel? When do we make that assessment?”

Kiper: “I want eight years.”

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
