Changing the play

Smart play by Teddy.

Panthers faced third-and-2 on their 28 when Bridgewater came to the line and surveyed the Falcons’ defense. Curtis Samuel had converted three third downs in the first half with clutch catches, continuing a trend that started last week against the Cardinals.

But Bridgewater had other plans with him on this third-down play. Noticing the Falcons had brought in a sixth defensive back, Bridgewater motioned for Samuel to join him in the backfield and checked to an inside running play.

“I just noticed they were in dime personnel. It’s like, hey, man, we’re gonna make this DB that came into the game, we’re gonna make him tackle. So we ran the ball right at him,” Bridgewater said. “Checked to inside zone, ran right to the DB and Curtis did the rest. The offensive line also gave him an extra push.”

Samuel hit the hole hard and caromed off a couple of defenders to get past the first-down marker, then received a boost from left tackle Russell Okung, who grabbed Samuel before his knee hit the ground and pushed him forward for several more yards. The 17-yard gain kick-started a 14-play, 76-yard drive that bled nearly eight minutes off the clock before Joey Slye’s third field goal of the day.

“Hats off to Curtis. The guy found a way to stay on his feet,” Okung said of Samuel. “And as an offensive line, we just want to be able to finish the play.”

“That was a great check by Teddy. That’s not a called play. Teddy checks to that run,” Rhule added.

    • I don't really care as much about athleticism and arm strength.  While Murray might be better in that regard, I think Bryce has enough of both to do well in the NFL. The main reason this trade reference is silly is the money and the fact that Murray has been around a long while and hasn't proven that he can perform consistently when the game is on the line.  Bryce has shown that he can play well in the clutch (in the few opportunities he has had).
    • If Bryce can continue the level of play he showed after the benching, then there's a good shot we at least compete to win the division. Tampa is a solid team but even last year in our week division they went 10-7 and will be on their 4th OC in as many years. The Saints are a mess and are in a mist of a half rebuild half still trying to compete mode and will probably be starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are a wild card as they have a really good offense but are we really crowning Michael Penix as a franchise QB after just 3 games?  The only thing I want out of this season is for Bryce to come out and without a shadow of a doubt prove he's our franchise QB. If that happens then most of the fanbase would be happy and I believe we'd be in a good place record wise at the end of the season. Maybe falling just short of winning the division with a chance to sneak in as a wild card team.
