Rhule: We Have to Get That Play in Quicker to Teddy.

But I strongly dislike his penchant for signing and starting players solely because he coached them in college.

Let's examine this statement for factual content.  (Hint:  It's not really very solid)

There are five players from Temple on our active roster:  Robby Anderson, Sam Franklin, Colin Thompson, PJ Walker and Tahir Whitehead.

Tahir Whitehead was never coached by Matt Rhule while at Temple.  During TW's college days, Rhule was various flavors of offensive assistant at Temple.  Rhule never actually coached him.

Robby Anderson has been great.  One of our best FA WR's . . . ever?  I can't think of a better one at least.  Maybe Keyshawn?

We only have one Baylor Bear on the roster:  Bravion Roy.  He's actually been pretty good this year on a bad defense.  He hasn't been outstanding by any means, but he hasn't looked out of place either.

So, in all, there are five players on the active roster that Rhule coached in college, one a big part of our offense, the other a nice depth piece on defense.  Honestly, on a team as lacking in talent as this one, it's not really all that different than playing the averages.

We also have four players from South Carolina . . . does that mean Rhule favors Gamecocks as well?

Look, Rhule has made some mistakes, but don't buy into all the hype about him bringing in players he's coached.  Sure, media and coverage guys talk about it because, well, they need something to talk about.  It's just not that big a deal.

Panthers havent closed well. But they have been in almost every game. That last sentence is amazing to me with the lack of talent we have on this team, especially defense. The future is bright fellas. TB isn't the QB of the future and everyone on the team knows it. He is the QB now. That's it.

This team has excelled given the talent level of the roster. Sure, point out the Jets, Bengals, Jags, etc, but they also have a couple studs sprinkled into their rosters. I believe this team could have been at .500 right now with a couple of better late-game decisions- be they from the HC, OC or whomever; and that's a far cry from where I originally saw this team at 4-12.

Guarantee if we would have kept Cam.... we’d be reading endless threads about OL help and how shitty the defense is.

If we were open to keeping Cam, we might have been more interested in Bieniemy (who by all accounts I've read was not given as much consideration because he wanted to keep Cam). I'm interested to see how he does when he finally gets a HC gig.

As a procedural thing, I understand feeling the need to get the play call in sooner.

As a reality thing, I understand that the play produced a wide open WR in the end zone for what would've been a game winning TD and Teddy admitted he would've checked out of that play that we know in hindsight worked to perfection (aside from his wildly errant pass). So Teddy didn't just fail in the execution of the play but also in his pre-snap read.

    • Most teams OLs are dealing with injuries at the end of the season. So by that token all QB play should be horrific across the board, but it's not.  Using the OL as an excuse anytime a QB plays bad is just lazy.  This is the same OL when Bryce had his good games not so long ago.  So do they suck just when Bryce does bad? Obviously they played well enough when y'all were doing your victory laps and saying 'you told us Bryce was the man' in the victories. It goes back to my stance with Bryce all along...he's a low end starting QB.  He'd be a great backup. Bryce is going to have a few really nice games a season at this point in his career, with a few WTF games mixed in, but very middling overall.
    • Good Lord! I bet the O-line play wasn't the worst since 1980.  And @thebdawg, injuries absolutely can make for a bad showing at the end of the day. That's not an excuse, it's just a fact.
    • Defense stepped up after that and held them to a FG. Offense proceeded to turn it over on downs right after.  Was it an incredibly dumb penalty, of course it was. The defense played their asses off though and got zero help from the offense. If you force them to punt at that point instead of the penalty do you really think the offense does anything differently?
