They may not be thinking QB

Many assume a QB will be the first pick. How about if that is wrong. How about if Rhule, Hurney, and Tepper aren't thinking that at all. Maybe they have a completely different strategy then is assumed.

They signed a QB they believed in. Are they going to kick him to the curb after one crazy season? Think you guys may be disappointed with what they will do.

I think the plan was always to be competitive, but ultimately lose this season. Then get a high draft pick and draft our QB. Have him sit a year under Teddy then take over in 2022. We’re right on track. Actually I think they were shooting for Lawrence, but we somehow won 3 in a row.

So...Jets get a new coach...they have lots of needs. They tell Cinci they will take Sewell unless Cinci want to trade picks to get him.  They do...now with the 3rd pick..the Jets find a QB needy team that wants to trade up.Suddenly the Jets have a boatload of draft picks for the next 2 years.

Just a thought.

I had a similar thought on the Jags now have the #1 pick thread.  The Jets need a lot, and parlaying the #2 pick into a boatload of picks this year and next would be a good outcome for them.  Of course, they will proceed to screw it up, but that's just what they do.

I'm not against drafting a QB if its Lawrence ot Fileds. But Trask, Matt Jones or Lance do not move me. I'd rather fortify the team in other areas. In my opinion the Panthers are 2 years from rally bringing the noise. By then whoever they put behind center will have success.  Please check the resume of QB's that come from OSU, FLA and Alabama.

This guy gets it. When they improve the o-line, get CMC back, and continue to add to the defense, the phrase “we need a QB” will be long gone. Good chance that by middle of next year the Panthers turn the corner. Remember, this is an entire new team that had no offseason prep time together. They aren’t going to ditch Teddy with all that has happened this year. They will be smart and continue to put in pieces. And the timing will be perfect because when all the pieces are in place, Brady and Brees will be done and the Falcons QB will be on the way out, leaving the Panthers with the best team in the south as well as the youngest. You see, the key is patience and perspective.

The Panthers played one heck of defensive football in the second half yesterday...But did u see the first half? Aaron Jones had 114 yatds at the half. The week before they let one of the lowest rated QB's in the NFL Drew Lock pick them apart. They Let Kurt Cousins go 75 yards in less than a minute on them. The defense have some great pieces in Chinn,Brown, Burns and YGM...Imagine what a stud linebacker and another attacking defensive tackle could do for this team. In the first two rounds that would be my picks.

I am 100% on the QB train if there is one the coaches like.

However, if we go another direction, there are only 3 options that I like.

Option 1 is to take Micah Parsons. Some hate the idea of a LB this early, he would change their minds. Amazing talent.

Option 2, trade back grabbing another teams 1st and their 2nd. Draft Dannisaw with the later 1st, and finally have LT spot filled. Fill 2 more spots in the 2nd round, hopefully Jevon Holland is one of the picks.

Option 3, trade back getting the other teams 1st this year, and their 1st next year. Draft Dannisaw this year, have 2 1st next year.

great so what pick are the panthers gonna have when you're ready to take one of these future QBs that you personally like

This point should be made, and it is valid.  I would argue that we have to step back and see the big picture--and to see it clearly, you have to look at the situation when Rhule took over.

  • They knew Cam was shot.  So did most teams in the NFL--or he would have been signed to a long-term deal.

True that.

The I-hate-Teddy crowd is mutually inclusive with the we-shoulda-kept-Cam crowd...

...dodging the $200M+ extension they were all pining & advocating for looks like a pretty darn good decision by Tepper/Hurney/Rhule right about now.

They signed a qb they either A) believed in at the time. or B) believed could be an effective bridge to their qb of the future or C) thought B was most likely while leaving themselves an extra year on the deal if TB turned out to be said qb. Either way, nothing about a 3 year deal where almost all of the money is front loaded in the first 2 years for the lower end of the going rate for starting qb's says they were absolutely and without reservation sold on TB as the future of the franchise at the position.

They're not going to kick him to the curb after one season, but they can easily do so after 2 if they decide to, and given that Rhule's track record and Tepper's own words make it clear we shouldn't really expect to be a force to be reckoned with until year 3 at a minimum, I'm not all that super disappointed.  At this point do I enjoy watching Teddy checkdown do his checkdown thing?

Not really but I don't think it's any great derailment of the plan either and this was never going to be a competitive season for us. I also don't think there is anything about what they've done that says they won't seriously consider a qb if the right qb is available in the draft.

    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
