Let’s hope our new GM is good at evaluating college QBs

Despite Hurney's flaws everywhere else, the dude was absolute money in the first round and I'm all of a sudden more worried about our first round selection this year.  We may revert back to a ~50% bust rate in the first, that we saw in the Gettleman days.  Hopefully we can cushion that blow with better selections beyond the first round.

Saints will more than likely be resting their starters so the hope for not winning is slim. Still it's possible they don't. Even at 7 I'm not a huge fan of grabbing a QB that 6 needy teams passed on. I think we probably can pick up a good CB or maybe a DE at 7 but anything else might be a stretch and we need to land starters not projects.

The Saints will absolutely not be resting their starters. They still have a shot at the bye and if they lose they'll likely end up the #3 seed.

I agree, but there (as you know) are many other jobs.

When Marty left, the reason was announced as a disconnect between Rhule and Marty.  I think they meant "philosophically." A good GM knows the skill set and expectations of each player within the system--I do not think Marty really got to know systems that well to grasp the details and nuances.  He drafted safe, plug and play players.  In fact, I recall an article about Cam Newton's playing style, and RR joked that he had to talk Marty into taking Cam over Marcel Dareus.  (Remember, we drafted 2 DTs in the 3rd round to compensate for it).  He drafted Luke, a LB that could have played outside or inside--not a problem.  He drafted Beason--same deal.  He drafted RBs--in back-to-back seasons.  So yeah, he was good in the first round drafting safe players who could play multiple schemes or offenses.

And let's not forget that when his arse was on the line, he traded away next year's first rounders to move up for Otah and E. Brown.

He overpaid to keep our core together by dolling out huge contracts to RBs when they were undervalued.  He extended Jake Delhomme after the 5-interception Cardinal NFC playoff game and Tommy John surgery.  Yikes.

So he was money because he took players that could play immediately or were no brainers--I give him that.  However, I also think his second round problems were because players he researched in the first round fell into the second round.  He saw value when he should have seen red flags.

But to get talent later, you really have to go after players who are excellent fits.  That is where Marty's lack of football acumen comes into play.

Yeah it's probably not likely but ev5if they win they will have to win tiebreakers. They could opt to rest Brees and co. And just take the 3rd seed.

We could look at Wilson and see reasons to stay away--Lance may not be a good fit.

I’m probably in the minority here but if Brady can’t develop a scheme for Lance because he’s not a “good fit” then we need to get rid of Brady. Franchise QBs are rare and you need OC’s that maximize their talent and work with the talented QBs they have. And I’m actually pretty confident Rhule understand this.

I understand scheme fit up to a point. But you don’t pass on a franchise qb because your offensive coordinator doesn’t know what to do with him. Add in the fact Brady lobbied for Bridgewater to come here and I honestly wouldn’t care if he leaves.

I’m sure I’m in the minority here but if us beating Washington makes us miss out on drafting Zach Wilson and instead have to take Trey Lance I’m doing backflips. After watching some scouting breakdowns of both (just YouTube and I do not claim to be an expert just a guy who loves football) I believe Trey Lance has a closer comp to Josh Allen and Zach Wilson is closer to Drew Lock. Also in scouring the web, watching their interviews etc FOR ME Trey Lance has intangibles that are more aligned with Matt Rhules “process” as opposed to Wilson.

Make no mistake I’d be absolutely giddy and excited to draft about any young qb (not Justin Fields though) if that means the Teddy experiment is over. I know Lance would have to sit for awhile so I’ll have to watch Teddy game manager a bit more but I believe other than Lawrence Lance has to highest long term upside of all the QBs. Draft season is approaching guys and girls.

If 4 QBs get selected before #9 I’ll be shocked. If we lose next week #9 is the worst we will pick, and we could move up so I still see us being in a very favorable spot to get a QB we want. Tepper won’t be afraid to move up if needed also

I'll join the chorus in agreement with this.  Looking at who is in front of us, only Jacksonville is a virtual lock to take a QB.  Even the Jest may decide to grab Sewell and give Darnold a decent try.

They may also be the most likely team in front of us to trade down, followed by the Falcons.

I also think that because of the depth of the QB class, trading up may be at a premium.  The Broncos perhaps could be entertaining that, but if they are looking at the teams between them and the Jest (I am assuming the Jags pick is untouchable), we are the only other team likely to be focusing on QBs.  That means their willingness to trade up is probably based on how many in the QB class get passing grades on their draft chart.

The rest above us are Dolphins (owners of Houston's pick), Falcons, Bengals, Eagles, Lions, and Giants.

Other teams who might trade up would be the 49ers, Colts, and Foreskins (teams who think the may be a QB away) and the Cowboys and/or Saints.  If the Cowboys are on the list, it is because they let Dak walk or tagged him and found a trading partner, both of which would take somebody off the needy list.

There are others that have QB on their draft needs, but not immediately or badly enough to pay what it will cost to move up.
