You can make a case about Antonio Brown, but he was/is a nut case. Deshaun is not that.

Free agents will still sign with the Texans, but probably not big ones if Texans do that.

Hint: they won't.

Flipside, when was the last time an NFL player forced his way out and it worked well for either or both sides?

"Big" free agents are as rare as hen's teeth and it's not like the Texans were one of a small handful of desired locations in the first place --- McNair gives no f**** on that front.

I really can't think of any meaningful "incentives" for the Texans as it goes to getting a "deal done"...

Keep in mind, I don't think Deshaun has the balls to fail to show up for camp....

Look, we can talk all day about leverage, but one thing has always been true in sports: when a player wants out, it always happens. 

When is the last time a high-profile athlete publicly demanded out and it didn’t happen?

People also seem to be ignoring the idea that the Texans in all likelihood will suck again. They sucked last year despite Watson’s best season. Now they are older with no cap space and no first round pick. They will be bad. And the situation won’t get any better. 

Yes they have leverage but by keeping him you are absolutely wrecking your team chemistry. Watson will get traded without a doubt.

I see a lot of misinformation in all of these Watson threads so it might be good to explain how some of this works.

First of all the financial reasons Watson won't sit out too long:

So far in his career he has made about $40m.  Lets assume between agents and taxes he lost about 40% (speak up any accountants) of that, that leaves about $24m.

Sounds great, but $27m of that was a signing bonus, of which he has only played one year of.  According to Schefter they could actually go back after $21.6m.  

So if he has $24m and they can go after $21.6m, that only leaves $2.4m.  To most of us that is enough to live a lifetime but I'm guessing he has bigger bills than us.  I know he probably has some endorsement money also but overall he stands to lose a large percentage of his income.  

He needs his money way more than the Texans need theirs.  He won't sit out for an extend time or retire.  

 

 

In regards to the "no trade clause" it doesn't create as much leverage as some on here think. 

A "no trade clause" has the most leverage when a player DOESN'T want to be traded.  Example:

Team says, "Hey Desean, we are trading you to Minnesota", Desean says, "no thanks, I like it here, I have a no trade clause."

No trade clauses are mostly designed to help players NOT get traded.  Once a player says he wants to get traded he basically loses some of the leverage that the clause carries.  Example:

Desean says "I want to be traded".  Desean says, "I really want to go to the 49ers".  Teams says "we have better deals from the Jets and Panthers, you can choose between those two or you can not be traded at all"

The team knows Desean wants to leave, and they know if he wants to leave that bad he will go to most teams.

Don't get me wrong, the no trade clause helps, and yes Desean can sit out and it does hurt the team but he doesn't have all of the leverage like some on here think.

 

 

 

 

They're going after the money that he's scheduled to get paid, not the money he's already made.

Keep in mind, I don't think Deshaun has the balls to fail to show up for camp....

The biggest and simplest is that good luck building your new team around the new management when the QB is begging to get out... and when you could have multiple first rounders to turn things around with.  That's a ton of incentive to find a situation that benefits both sides.

      I know it's only been training camp and one preseason game, but I think T-Mac has already shown his floor to be exactly what I said about him in the pre-draft process. That his floor if he never improves his game, is as one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, if not even still a low end #1 (i.e. a 25th-ish best WR in the league). I think it's safe to say he's already established himself as our #1, and there are only a small handful of teams in the league where I don't think he'd be their starting #2 WR in Week 1. Bengals (Higgins), Dolphins (Waddle), Eagles (Smith), Bucs (Godwin if healthy), Rams (Adams) are really the only teams where I think he'd be the #3 as a rookie in Week 1.  A few others like the Lions (Williams), Bears (Odunze), Seahawks (Kupp), Commanders (Deebo), where he'd be the 2b to start the season, just because they're vets and/or already have a year or two of experience with their team/QB. And even having said that, I think by year 2, he's better than every one of those players (And no, I'm not saying he's already going to be better than a prime version of Adams, just whatever he'll be at 33 next year), and same goes for Kupp, but that's more because it seems like his body might be quitting on him in a way that hasn't happened to Adams (yet).

      Well to be fair, Horn not practicing right now to let his stitches heal up from a car accident isn't something that should be concerning.  Sure, you don't want him missing practice leading into the season, but it's one that once healed, won't have lingering affects or fear of re-injuring it, it was just bad luck.

      Quality backups are absolutely important. This franchise has been plagued with depth problems. That said, there is a little bit of dismay that Mays can't beat out a 1-legged man, and all the talk going into the off-season was how BC would certainly be gone since he had position versatility.  In the end, it doesn't matter too awfully much, as I would be shocked to no end if Corbett makes it through the season. We know what we have in reserve, and that should surely be better than trying to sign random fat guys mid season to try and take over.
