Curious to see the yearly breakdown.

Would love to keep a dynamic duo going if he performs well.

After some research:

About $2M this year 4M next year.

Hopefully the kicking the can down the road is a "this year" thing only.

Can someone explain why they needed to add voided years to the deal rather than just a 1 year deal?

I do believe it allows them to keep the cap hit for ''this'' season lower. The voidable years allow you to artificially spread out the bonus money.

Another good example is JuJu's contract with PIT, it's set up in similar fashion.

They're stretching the payment out instead of paying him the full guarantee this year. Trying to save some cap $ this year.

You can spread out the signing bonus over 5 years.  Making his cap hit much lower than what is would be otherwise.

So is he under contract for 5 years or just 1? All the reports said he signed a 1 year deal. Guessing the rest of the bonus just becomes dead cap?

It is a 1 year deal with 4 voidable years added to the end of the deal.  The extra 4 years void, from what I have read, on Feb 25 of 2022.  And yes the remaining bonus hits the cap in 2022 as just dead cap.

It's a 1-year deal. Those voidable years do not mean "we have him under contract" if he plays well, it's all paper years that automatically go away after this year is over. You are allowed to pro-rate signing bonus money up to 5 years, so purely for cap flexibility purposes, they tack on the voidable years to push 4/5 of the singing bonus amount beyond this year.

So we have a cap hit on a 1-year deal of $1.992m ($990k vet min base salary + $1.002m of prorated signing bonus) while he still gets his full $6m in cash. The voidable years let us defer the rest of the $4.008m in signing bonus as a dead cap hit after this year. It's just a timing difference. The team will have the full $6m count against the cap eventually, this just allows for immediate flexibility in a down cap year.

Pretty simple.  If he plays well we have him under contract.  If not, we cut loose and don't lose much.

I'm super confused. Is he potentially under contract for 5 years? I thought it was just a one year prove it deal.

Dave that's not true, we only have him for 1 year on this contract no matter what. Those other 4 years will automatically void, they are built in solely to spread out the cap hit (not a big fan of that aspect of it but we'll see how it plays out).

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
