Peter King: Panthers want to come out of this draft with more picks than the seven it currently holds

From Albert Breer's latest MMQB (link)

Speaking of Sewell, he’s one of a number of players I’d see in play for the Panthers at No. 8. The genius of the Sam Darnold trade, by GM Scott Fitterer and coach Matt Rhule, is that it maintains the team’s flexibility to take a quarterback there while creating new flexibility not to take a quarterback with the pick. If Fields slides to No. 8, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his slide stop there—be it via the Panthers taking him or trading the pick to someone who would. At the same time, Carolina’s in a nice spot to address its needs at corner (with a Jaycee Horn or Patrick Surtain) or tackle (with, perhaps, Sewell) and go forward with Darnold, too.

If Sewell is there with Fields, it better be a great trade for us to miss out on Sewell...

I said we were going to trade back a few weeks ago and nothing has changed. Rhule wanted to trade back last year but Hurney got Brown. With Fitterer here the possible of a trade back is there whether a QB is available or not. Fields and Lance are far from sure things and Darnold is just as likely to succeed if not more so. Just like we passed on Simmons and got Chinn in the second. We have our QB and see several tackles available if we stay or drop back.  Seems this has been the plan once we drafted Darnold despite all the Lance and Fields conversation. I figure once SF gave up the farm for the third pick it became too expensive. Given both the Jets and Jaguars don't seem likely to move it is possible we may have traded back even with the third pick. Obviously would gotten more but let's see how much in the draft.

Scott Fitterer, in his first press conference as the Panthers GM, stated that it was a general philosophy of his that, unless the Panthers are picking in the top 15 or so picks, he's going to try to trade back to get more picks. so this is not exactly breaking news, guys. being at #8, he still has room to trade back and stay within that top 15 or so, if the value is right.

I’d rather quality over quantity

"Quantity has a quality all its own."  Attributed by various sources to both Napoleon and Stalin.

In WWII, the Allied strategy in Europe depended on putting more mass produced but inferior Sherman tanks in the field, as compared to the superior and more lethal but numerically fewer German Panzers.

So, there is some justification for the idea of trading down and accumulating more picks.  For the record though, if Sewell, Slater or Pitts are still on the board at 8, I would take them and not trade down.

Umm, we are basically paying Teddy the same as Dak and Mahomes for a wasted year. We played Madden just added/kept bad players and made bad decisions.

Jaguars, Jets and Miami all basically just did the “tank” and accumulated a ton of draft capital to go with their young QBs. Will it work for them, maybe (probably had Miami drafted Herbert) but that’s what they just did and I’d say they all will be in better position if their QBs work out. We on the other hand just gave up 3 picks for Darnold. Will it work? Maybe, but we sure don’t have a lot of wiggle room if it doesn’t and we are reclaiming scraps and they got top 5 talent. If Darnold doesn’t work out we aren’t well armed for the 2022 draft unless we stink so bad we get the top pick.

Teddy was worth a flier. He was young with some theoretical upside. It didn’t work out here. In the grand scheme of things, that contract is not a big deal. Basically a two year commitment for a QB is nothing, it’s a throwaway deal.

The Jets didn’t tank. They just suck. The only guy they traded was Adams, and they acquired an older safety along with a package of picks, proving that it wasn’t just a teardown deal.

For all of the talk of the Dolphins tank, the drafted #5 last year and #18 this year, three whole spots better than Carolina this year in their “tank” year.  And they started a 35 year old QB in 2019, doesn’t really sound to me like a team who is gutting the roster of veterans. Basically, they just robbed the Texans blind for Tunsil.

You could argue the Jaguars legitimately tanked, I guess, and we’ll see what happens. It took the Jets pulling off two late season wins for them to even get in position for Lawrence.

It’s funny you criticize the “bad decisions” in FA for Carolina, but act like the teams that load up on all these picks are definitely going to draft certified studs. Tua, for example, is awful.

I'm sorry but if Fields is there at 8, you have to take him. The QB position needs to be addressed on way or another. You don't have the luxury to trade away potential Franchise QB's when you are LOOKING for a Potential Franchise QB. Makes no sense.

Technically they already did.

I know a lot of folks don't believe in Darnold, but all that really matters is whether or not the Panthers do.

    • Lol, good one. Rod will never let Necas Play center
    • All I can say is... I have some happiness off the rags choking and losing to the Panthers. Hopefully the Western conference team wins the Stanley cup, but now I can be 100% uninvested in the playoffs
