Biography

PRO: Seeking a big, physical and versatile defensive lineman, the Titans selected Penn State's DaQuan Jones in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Since then, he has become one of the mainstays of the Titans defensive lineup, appearing in all 16 games in four of his first six seasons, including every game in 2018 and 2019. Jones offers an impressive combination of size, athleticism, intelligence and power. The 6-foot-4-inch, 322-pounder earned a full-time role as a 3-4 defensive end by his second season but has the ability to play multiple spots on the line. He was signed to a new multi-year contract extension in 2018.

I LOVED that guy leading up to that draft. It's unfortunate he's been so derailed by injuries. I'd still be willing to give him a try on a prove it deal with very low to no guaranteed money.

Why the Titans should keep Jones: DaQuan Jones is one of very few players that was on this roster before general manager Jon Robinson took over as the head decision maker. Since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Jones has been a consistent and good football player. He’s one of the team’s better Day 3 draft picks in recent memory. He doesn’t always stand out on the stat sheet, but Jones plays an important role on the defensive line. Often lining up at nose tackle, Jones is tasked with stopping the run and eating up double teams. While doing so throughout his tenure as a Titan, he’s allowed players like Jeffery Simmons, Jurrell Casey and Jayon Brown to take on single blocks and make plays in and around the line of scrimmage. It’s an unheralded yet important role, and few players around the league do it better than Jones does.

This franchise lost A LOT of leaders in the locker room last offseason. Just one offseason after watching guys like Casey, Logan Ryan and Delanie Walker walk out the door, can they afford to lose another leader in Jones?

Why the Titans should let Jones walk: Jones offers little to nothing as a pass rusher. As the NFL game continues to become more pass happy with each passing year, early down run stoppers are becoming less and less valuable. This team badly needs to find a way to get more pressure on the QB in 2021, and Jones doesn’t help them do that. Jones is also turning 30 years old this coming December. He’s not getting younger and won’t be around forever. They need to find a contingency plan here.

Also, pairing Simmons with another defensive linemen in Jones’ place, one that could get after the passer more could be an interesting direction to go in.

Final verdict: The Titans should bring Jones back on a short-term deal that pays him less annually than his last contract paid him ($7 million). If they can get Jones back on a two or three year deal that pays him roughly $5-6M per year, I think it would make a lot of sense to bring him back.

Prediction: The Titans opt to bring Jones back in 2021. They have a tremendous amount of respect for the role he plays both as a run stopper and is a leader in the locker room. I don’t think this team is ready to move on from him just yet.

He doesn't get sacks but our run game just got bolstered in a major way with two guys warranting double teams in the middle. Saucy.

This was my thought, you can't double team them both. Don't worry, we added Reddick, Fox, and Perryman to YGM, Brown and Chinn...We'll get our sacks anyway.

Fitt-Dawg plugging up all the holes on this roster before the draft.  This stuff is SOOOOO refreshing.  Its like night and day from the Hurney/Rivera regime.  Have we EVER been this active in free agency before?

      Honestly, I have only one pair of white shoes (only because they were new and like $4 from the Goodwill) other than my easily-cleaned Crocs. A man's got to think ahead.

      Who are your top three breakout candidates for next season?    My three: Jatavion Sanders- Simply put he is the best receiving TE we have had since Olsen. We all saw his potential over that three game stretch prior to his neck injury where he showed a real connection with Bryce. Good route runner with glue for hands, limited blocking upside but he gives solid effort. With Tremble already being hurt I don’t see a reason why he already isn’t our starter and clear future at TE. Trevin Wallace- For a developmental LB forced into a starting role last year he  exceeded expectations. LB is one of the hardest positions to adjust to from college, and for a prospect who was widely regarded as very raw, surprisingly he was solid in coverage and only had an 11.9% missed tackle rate. He was overly aggressive consistently, and needs to work on his play recognition. But he is set up to be our best LB next season, and likely starter for years ahead. Even barring reaching his upside, his floor was clearly a lot higher than draft pundits assumed(Morgan can scout LBS). Cade Mayes- I am hopeful Cade wins the starting job at C this season. He may have been our most improved player last season, he looked like an above average starting C after he took over for an injured Corbett. He allowed 0 sacks on 327 pass block snaps. Corbett can not stay healthy, and at this stage in his career Mayes is objectively the better player. Mayes is only 26 and gives us the potential of stability at C, something we have never had since Ryan Kalil retired. Corbett slots in as a great backup C/Guard, and Cade continues to develop and gain more chemistry with Bryce and our stud duo of Hunt/Lewis.
