Linebackers

Does anyone else have concerns with the talent level at starting linebackers.  ??

S Thompson has never been as advertised for a first round draft pick

D Perryman,  I just think he's average at best.  Not very big and gets lost in the scrums

H Reddick ,  had 12 sacks last season.

 Seems like our weakest corp

Not at all. I was just thinking last night about how it's a pretty nice unit.

Perryman if healthy is rather stout and physical. I'm quite optimistic about the group.

I can't wrap my mind around these untruths.

So sorry that Shaq wasn't another Davis.  VERY FEW men can say they are.

Perryman is a very good, smart MLB.  A significant upgrade over last year.

Reddick is a pass rush specialist.

Not sure whom is going to round out the 3rd LB spot.  Considering that we don't keep 3 on the field every snap, it's not as important as it use to be.

Either way we are much improved over last year just with having Perryman.  I pray he remains healthy this year.

Difficult to stay healthy as a good Linebacker.

We were spoiled by Luke and Davis.

On paper, what we have now is a huge improvement over last year.  Even Luvu has double the pff of Whitehead, for what its worth.

I actually had the opposite thought. I mean this unit is not Luke and TD, but Shaq is a high level LB and Im actually really excited about Perryman in the middle.

This is a big improvement from last season.

Yes, even our depth looks better, on paper.  We don't have the stars but we've focused on adding quality with depth.

I'm sorry but...IMO the Safety position is in worse shape at this point in time.

At Safety, we have Chinn, and ...???

At least at LB we have Shaq, above average. Perryman, above avg.. And Riddick, a way above avg. rusher. And we have depth.

So no, LB is not our worse position.

Not thrilled with the LBer corp, and that's mostly because we've always had an amazing MLB, and a Pro Bowl guy next to him.

I think they're serviceable, but if the injury bug bites we're in big trouble. I think fixing the defensive line will help out a lot here though.

I know we have Perryman slated to start at the MIKE most likely, but does anyone think Shaq adding weight means more reps inside? I guess added weight is a plus either way if your speed and conditioning aren't negatively affected though.

Also Christian Miller is be projected as a LB- he was taking snaps as a SAM (at least I think I heard that in an interview).

We'll see. I was surprised we didn't draft a LB at some point. But without going back and looking at the complete draft order I can't say where or of I would've taken a LB over the pick that we actually made. If we're somewhat deemphasizing the position I'm definitely okay with that. We've historically way over-prioritized IMO. I would've just preferred to see some effort made to potentially backfill Shaq's spot to set ourselves up to part with that contract.

    • ^I want that, but Rodriguez over KC. Don't hate KC as much at that spot, but rather take a WR with the pick we gain in that trade than in the 1st.
    • I think there is good points in this thread to what the team needs to do. 1) Ball isn't really the issue but, he needs reigned in.  Coach and he need to realize when things aren't falling from the three and learn to play other facets of the game.  He's an amazing talent and when he's on, he's on.  But he can also shoot you out of a game.  We're lucky Miami went that way but that is too many missed threes.  He still needs to bulk up if he can, but he needs to drive more.  He's pretty good at finishing usually and hopefully the fouls come (probably not though).   2) The whole team needs to be more physical.  As others have stated, we need more bulk in our bigs.  Diabate is a hurricane of energy but cannot go against the larger centers.  I love him on the team but he should be more of a match up type guy or energy off the bench.  I think he'd be insane off the bench.  However I think the biggest issue with Diabate and Kaulk is the lack of offensive game.  The lack of a jump shot or anything.  Teams figured out to just leave them on the screen and crash lanes.  There has to be some sort of threat.  We need a 4 and a 5 that can do those things and stretch out the court. 3) Bridges.  He's just undersized.  However, I feel he really threw his all into it the last few weeks when others were gassed.  He was ok not being a focal point.  I'd like to have him off the bench as well but I assume he'd be traded to make things work.  4) Miller.  Dude can light it up when on, but disappears for quarters at a time.  Also he needs to work on ball handling and passing.  He's a turnover machine at bad times.  Also hopefully over the injury so he can bulk up too.   5) Kon. Just a rookie.  Long season and back injury.  I have no doubt he'll be back stronger and focused.  Needs to work on defense and physicality like the whole team but yes, a rookie he'll get there. 6) Coby.  Has to be resigned, no question.  The bench lineup is rough without him running the point.  Team has big potential and the front office seems sharp.  They seen the hive and how crazy it got and how much the city wants this.
