What Was The Panthers Worst Move This Off Season/

Season 15 of the Mr. Scot Anime is freaking wild...who could have seen this twist in his character arc.  From criticizing every move of the FO (down to if the vibration frequencies in their breathing patterns were off by 1-2 Hz) to this, dare I say optimistic mentality of "let's all just STFU and trust the FO and see how this all plays out".  WILD.  Guess he really did despise Marty that much to have completely flipped his philosophy.

He was a Gettlemagic fanboy too. He just didn't like Marty was the core of his angst. Not a lot to like, to be sure, but the full 180 was a bit much.

The current crowd? Well....wait and see, IMO. Some good, some bad but mostly unknown.

So it looks hypocritical from every perspective? Good to know. I now expect Chuck to lecture us on how it’s wrong to start ALT accounts

Then why are you on a football forum?

There is nothing wrong with fans having an opinion of what they would have done differently.

Are you truly happy with how we addressed LT this year? It’s ok to have an opinion.

Would you have drafted Horn? From reading your post I’m guessing no.  My money is on you wanting Slater, but it’s like you are afraid to go out on a limb.

I probably would have took Fields in the first and Rudinez in the second, that might look really stupid in a year, so what.

I probably would've taken Micah Parsons. Brown in 2020, Parsons in 2021, etc.

I'm on a football forum to discuss football, but that doesn't change the fact that some discussions are stupid.

I know it's a big deal these days for people to act like Jim Rome, make their "bold prediction" so they can come back later and say "see, I nailed it" (or act like they never said it if it turns out to have been a dumbass idea) but that kind of silly sh-t doesn't interest me.

I have ideas about what was good and what wasn't, but just like everyone else's they're just educated guesses (though truthfully, "educated" isn't a word that applies to every poster's ideas). There are times when I might feel like discussing those, but generally I don't see the point.

So basically, it's not so much "afraid to go out on a limb" as it is not giving a sh-t about going out on a limb because I don't have anything to prove to anybody.

Then don’t jump in the thread.

Here again it’s a fan forum, people like to play armchair GM.  Not to mention it’s a really slow time of the year.

Yeah I mean there was definitely a lot to hate about Marty and almost all of it justified.  The annoying thing is that when essentially your entire personality and post history here is informed/defined solely by your hatred for Marty Hurney (and previously Ron Rivera), don't try to desperately present yourself as this bastion of objective enlightened thought who has transcended the feeble and pathetic emotional whims of mortals.  Own that sh#%...be like "yeah I f@#%*(*@#&%ing despise Marty with all my being and as long as he is our GM, I will continue to predict that we will suck and every signing will bomb and every draft pick will bust".  Hell, I can respect that much more than someone who thinks he's above the fray but is low-key probably one of the most emotional posters here.

Anyways...this is WAY more Marty talk than this board deserves.  Thank god we can close that chapter and move on.  Well, never mind...this is the Huddle where we still dwell on drafts from like 9 years ago.

I think skipping on Fields will come back to bite us, and I am in full acknowledgement of the talent Jaycee Horn could turn out to be. I just don't think you essentially sell out for Darnold, those rookie QB contracts on TALENTED QBs which is what Justin is are too valuable to just pass on.

18M guaranteed / 22M over these next two seasons, while also eating the dead cap from getting the Teddy decision wrong and having to trade him is a bitter pill to swallow. That's money for guys we need to extend in the next few years IMO: Moton, Robby's deal ends this year (Marshall was drafted but is unproven), DJ Moore, Burns will soon follow.

It's a lot easier to keep that talent together with a rookie QB deal, and if Sam DOES show up, you can count on losing a stud or 2 when we're forced to pay market value in 2023. Maybe Shaq's money can help prevent that to some degree, but the point is that I'm not sure we made the best ''long term'' decision.

Sam seems like a way to say we improved by winning 7 games versus 5. And if that's the jump, I'd argue we'd be able to do that with a Justin Fields.

The age of the bup bup bup. That should be an experience that will give wiser minds a little better perspective not to just start drinking the koolaid and never let up. Proceed with caution is the best route as a seasoned Carolina Panthers fan.

Part of me thinks our staff didn’t think Fields would be there so they made a deal for Darnold. Then on draft day they didn’t want to go QB after giving up picks for Darnold. I still would have, but it looks awkward at best to draft a QB after trading for a young one. I agree with you, passing on a young QB talent while gambling on a struggling young QB has the potential to be the worst offseason move by far…

You could be right because the top teams selecting in the 2021 NFL Draft must have felt that way as well because they passed on him in the draft.

I have no idea how Fields will work out, but if he does turn out to be a very good, it certainly wouldn't be the first time multiple NFL teams passed on a future star.

One could also say if Fields bums out it he would not be the first rd quarterback that did it. Hope Fields is a success but one never knows until the season begins and he starts playing football in the highly competive NFL.

yeah i said the exact same thing on draft night on this very forum, but was told by Mr.Scot that was a stupid take...

But to add to this theory...the only reason I see for Rhule not taken Fields is either he wanted T.Lance/ he feels deep down PJ his QB, but the powers that be/fans need to warm up to the ideal.

Hear me out...If Lance is there, u take Lance, he can sit behind Darnold for a year. You now have Darnold, Lance, PJ...Darnold can play out a year while Lance catches up.

but Fields, Darnold, PJ...is a mess. Fields would be #1 no doubt. But here's the thing...the new GM is making his first pick ever. So yeah Fields would be thrown out there as the starter just because...alot of pressure. PJ would never see the field.

now, the easy way out but still makes you look like a genius card:

Pass on Fields, escape drama...get defensive help, if by chance Darnold sucks(GM fault) play PJ(Rhule looks like a QB guru)

I said since last year, PJ is Rhule's guy...Teddy was more so Brady n Hurney, Tepper too, let's not act like he didn't see Teddy going 5-0 when Brees went down when we had Allen starting for Cam.

But does Brady believe in PJ, probably not much

Hurney's gone now...so how can Tepper be sold off on PJ...

By allowing a young once to be thought good,1st round pick get his shot...but without being so tied to him you invested too much. Now if he bust, say hey let's give PJ a shot what's to left to lose...

Fields could stink for 2 years but still have 3 years to prove he's good

Darnold gets 1 year, but just in case he actually is good, u got one more year on the books...if not "teddy" him.

The only reason I was able to finally accept not taking Fields is because Rhule's guy is PJ...and he believes in PJ so much he's willing to start Darnold as his QB.

yes Mr.Scot incoming stupid post...Rhule is such a genius he traded for a lame QB to prove to others how good his #2 QB actually is...he's pulling a E. Taylor...but PJ's not Voodoo bc he's black but PJ is Saracen bc Rhule's coach him from the ground up. He knows the more doubt people place on PJ, the better he performs...

...sidenote: sean ryan going make this kid great...
