one day...the Panthers will just draft or bring in a guy that actually returns punts.  Sounds crazy.  But one day.  Maybe a hundred years from now.  They will figure that out.

Hell, we burned a 6th on a long snapper, why the heck not?

True.  TBF I'm not sure I'd feel great with our punt returner being a 6th round rookie. LS, not so worried.

My guess is Moore.  He averaged something like 9 yrds a return last year for Seattle.

Returner is a liiiiiittle low on the list when rebooting a roster.

3 phases in the game.  And we have been talking about PR for over a decade.   And I’m not talking about having to get a Devin Hester….but we generally are praying we don’t turn it over.

Joe Adams was the last actual attempt to solve it in the draft.  That is just life.  They don’t all hit.  The kid from Utah worked out pretty good for us though.

Honestly, our punt returner(s) didn't get much work last season. I sure hope that has changed.

Still, you'd think by this point we'd be seeing something about an unsung player making moves to be the returner. Just hearing crickets chirp at the moment.

Amen. We went two games at least without fielding a punt. Embarrassing.

Drafted, sure, but free agency has been a part of it as well. Ted Ginn Jr was brought in the year after Joe Adams was drafted, and while he wasn't called for return duty in 2014 & 2015, he did return to the job in 2016.

According to some Huddlers, CMC was a returner drafted in the top 10 lmao

2018 + 2019 was just like 2014 + 2015 in the by committee approach, but Pharoh Cooper was brought in to do returns and Trenton Cannon was also getting opportunities.

I think we'll see Trenton Cannon pulling return duty this upcoming season along with Shi Smith. Shi, despite training camp reports not giving the warm fuzzies in regards to his return ability, has plenty of it from his time at SCar.

Shi returned some kicks in college but never returned punts

    • Care to elaborate why you disagree? We kicked the ball off 3 times and we kept the Browns to starting field position of the 22, 27, and 10 (would have been 21 before a penalty). All 3 of those are successes with the modern kickoff rule.
    • Its August so obviously quality options are not there. The question is whether any improvement can be made to the bottom of the depth chart.
    • NFL has a huge amount of parity.  The talent level between most NFL starters outside of the top 5 to 10 guys at a position is very comparable.  2020 worst teams Jacksonville Jaguars - 1-15 (worst record in NFL) New York Jets - 2-14 Cincinnati Bengals - 4-11-1 Atlanta Falcons - 4-12 Houston Texans - 4-12 Carolina Panthers - 5-11 Detroit Lions - 5-11 Philadelphia Eagles - 4-11-1 Los Angeles Chargers - 7-9 Denver Broncos - 5-11 2024 Worst teams New York Giants - 3-14 (tied for worst) Cleveland Browns - 3-14 (tied for worst) Tennessee Titans - 3-14 (tied for worst) New England Patriots - 4-13 Carolina Panthers - 5-12 Jacksonville Jaguars - 4-13 Las Vegas Raiders - 4-13 New York Jets - 5-12 Chicago Bears - 5-12 Arizona Cardinals - 8-9 Bengals, Texans, Lions, Eagles, Broncos and the Jags have all made the the playoffs in the last 3 years. What I'm saying is it's stupid to argue when team is the worst when there is so much parity and the system allows quick turnarounds.
