Cam Newton Released

The thing about the Patriots was that Cam was in a lose lose situation. Let’s say he started, as soon as he threw a pick the fans would have been calling for Mac. As for as being vaccinated or not, that’s your choice: I’m fine if you get it . I’m fine if you don’t. It’s not my body. Wish him luck going forward but Cam is set for life. No need to feel sorry for him. He is still the best QB to ever put on a panther jersey

Oooh…ABC World news just said something para phrasing Newton saying that he had trouble learning the playbook because of Covid…

That can’t be the reason…right?

Just verbatim-ing from the report for others.

He previously said "His own covid battle set him back, making it harder to learn the playbook"

I might be wrong but so am pretty sure if you watch the I AM ATHLETE episode featuring Cam….he talks about how covid derailed his season.    Said the team kept moving when he was out and he could never catch back up to them.

Covid derailed everyone's lives. I lost my job because of covid and still haven't recovered and due to my age I probably never will. Much like millions of other people around the world.

can’t remember the backup, but there is a story he told about Tom Brady….

He asked Tom Brady about kicking him off the field and taking his reps in practice one day.  Brady told him everyone in the NFL is good.  That’s why he hogged the reps.  Paraphrasing.

Is he eligible for the practice squad?

Imagine if we had signed him for 4 years at $120m?  Remember when Cam wanted commitment?
Love Cam, but I knew Rivera had spent 9 years going off road with a Lamborghini.

    • Yeah I find myself flipping between the worst case scenario of Bryce either playing just mediocre enough for our decision makers to justify giving him a contract extension in their eyes because they want to justify drafting him. Or Bryce going back to playing poorly and us having no one else to fall back on because Pickett might be decent for one or two games but there's no one else and our locker room starts to get ugly because we went all in with our salary cap and guys careers are on the line. This scenario which IMO is the higher probability given our schedule and the amount of tape out there on Bryce is why I say if we can trade down and acquire a few more mid or late round picks we should draft a developmental QB. Not looking for a guy to be the savior but someone with the necessary physical tools and who could actually run a QB sneak. But we'll just have to see how it shakes out. I just want a competitive team but the last thing I want is the season to fall apart because we once again threw our arms up in regards to the QB room.
    • ^This. Rico was dynamite when we needed it last season, but not enough to keep but it massively upped his earning potential. It was a win-win for both sides. And he was there to cover the hole left by the injury to another RB, and hopefully his release to free agency means there's good news for us on the way. These new ones give us the opportunity to do that again, on the offensive line and elsewhere. We've got some long term question marks here and there due to injuries and age, and these players have a chance to up their value on the open market or settle down with us if the opportunity arises. And none of it ties us down with dead money down the road if it doesn't work out. And we've been in dead money hell for a decade now. Lease the ones you like, buy if you fall in love.
    • Our red zone offense was excruciatingly painful to watch last season. A half decent TE would do a lot to change that.
