"You need to pay attention to the Panthers"

Again, Albert, it’s early in the season, I don’t want to speak too soon. But we’re in really good shape right now. We just got to continue to stay healthy and keep getting better every single week.” And the interesting thing to me, from my talk with Darnold, was that I figured this one would be significant for everyone there because it wa the Saints, who’ve won the division four years in a row and were gangbusters against Green Bay in Week 1. But it didn’t really feel like that was ever part of the coaches’ or the players’ messaging. Maybe it’s because the Panthers have to play again Thursday (against the Texans). Maybe Darnold was just being guarded, after all he’s gone through in three years as a pro. Either way, the quarterback was hesitant to assign meaning to a Week 2 win, impressive as it might’ve been, and even if it reinforced the progress that was visible in Week 1. “Again, it’s Week 2,” Darnold said, laughing. “It is a good win, don’t get me wrong. We’re really happy about that win and the way that we played. But we gotta execute a lot better—in that second half, I feel like we left some points on the board, and just didn’t really end things the way that we wanted to. But a win’s a win, and it’s a good division win and we’re happy about that.”

This is the best part to me. They have their heads in the right place.

Good to hear Darnold acknowledging the issues we still need to address because what has been our biggest issues as a franchise is being unable to sustain any level of success. We don't get attention because too often, we fall on our faces when we do have the spotlight. I could point out endless losses to division rivals and the Seahawks but the most grating is being utterly embarrassed by the Steelers every single time we've faced them in recent history.

Thursday is our first big test not only because we are the only game that day but given the team we're facing and their circumstances, we are expected to win.

That's why I warn these folks about getting too excited.  The rest if the NFL is going to take notice now. No more overlooking this team from anyone.  So buckle up folks because we are in for some slobber knockers from here in out. That's the way I like it though.

They might not be so excited to play us.  Our defense is in pure ass whooping mode and I say.

BRING IT ON!!!!!

You mean we'll finally get to see some real football, pops?

I'm excited!

And of course if we beat the Texans, the chatter will be that "it's because Panthers played a rookie QB with no time (short week) to prepare for us."  (Never mind that it's a short week for us too with the added burden of travel, and having to prepare for a different QB at the last minute).

But honestly, beating the Saints the way we did yesterday was a big "real" win.

Sean Payton has had our number for a while.  They've got an excellent O line.  They'd just blown out Green Bay with largely the same players.  Losing their center was probably a huge factor for them.  And the coaches out with Covid... yeah.  It hurt them.  But Jameis still has talent.  So does Kamara and their D-line.  Almost all the pundits picked the Saints to win.  This one felt GOOD!

Ive seen a lot of Super Bowl seasons, and if there's one thing they all have in common it's that a little luck never hurts.

(that's not to say this is a Super Bowl season; just an observation)

I honestly don't think we have been over looked. I think we might just have the best front 4 in football right now. Teams really can't do much about them. They play the ball really well and rush the passer better. That's just really hard to plan for because no one has a Burns, Brown, Reddick combo on the practice squad. We are a really good defense. Our offense while not great doesn't have to be. They just don't have to turn the ball over and we win.

The defense has to prove its capable of getting off the field on 3rd down with a higher percentage rate than last year. That was their Achilles heel.  That and stopping the run constantly will determine how they are ranked at seasons end.

So far they have shown improvement in both areas.

I'm not referring to the talking heads.  I talking other teams.  To hell with what the media thinks or says.

I think Sean Payton and the Saints weren't ready for us.  I watched bits of his post game presser and the Drew Brees take about the college defense.  What I took from these things was simply they didn't see us coming.  They saw a joke of a team.  They underestimated us.  I don't know if other teams will going forward, but I sure hope they do.

I think the Saints still cannot believe what happened to them.

Sean will not let himself believe that Rhule and his band of misfits could possibly kick their asses so convincingly that it set a record for him and his team.

There is no chance in hell that could happen. Right?

fug the Saints.

BINGO!  The improvement in both areas has been really noticeable so far.  It's been quite some time since we've seen our defense stopping the run like we have these last 2 games.  Stopping Kamara felt particularly nice since he'd pretty much been a player we couldn't stop well in recent seasons.

And of course Kamara only had 5 yards rushing on 8 carries.  So nice to see.
