Some great points by Fitt on the latest panthers.com article:

“Gilmore's the second corner acquired since first-rounder Jaycee Horn broke his foot in Houston, but even in discussing that bad news, it was clear that the Panthers aren't thinking about this as a long-range project.

Fitterer said they're not ruling out having Horn return at some point later in the year, depending on his recovery.

"We're hoping he gets back," Fitterer said of Horn. "And we hope, we plan on going to the playoffs."

He said that pretty casually.”

Adding Gilmore also creates another decision to make down the road.

Like Jackson, his contract expires at the end of this season. And while Gilmore is a bit more of a wait-and-see based on his age (31) and recent injury (a quad injury which ended last season and forced him to start the year on the physically unable to perform list), they're fairly clear about their goals.

They'd love to have Gilmore around beyond this season. But they definitely want to keep Jackson, the 25-year-old who is playing his best football at the moment.

"I talked to Donte when we acquired CJ, and spoke to him briefly coming off the field today," Fitterer said. "Really this does not affect Donte at all. We know that we'd like to have him back. We think he wants to be back. We're planning, or budgeting I should say, to have him back. But this doesn't affect Donte at all."

We all have learned that many times these trades and pickups don't always work out so the proof is on the field. Still you have to give Fitts credit for swinging for the fences trying to help us weather these injuries. He is doing his job and getting Rhule the guys he needs to compete. Now it is up to Rhule and his team to coach them up and scheme some wins.

Someone on NFL Live said it best. NFL is moving towards needing 3 lockdown corners who can go man-to-man in order to play successful defense. Gone are the days where you need just 1 and can play cover 2. There's a lot of talent at WR in the league right now and teams are going 3 wide all game.

We lose almost nothing if they don't so it's worth the trade. If it works out we become a better team faster.

he also mentioned that sliding someone to Safety is an option..
Out of the 4: Gilmore, Horn, CJ and Donte - I see Gilmore and Donte being the prime candidates.. if Gilmore's injury has caused him to lose a step - he could still be very good roaming free in the secondary.. Jackson also has the ball skills and speed to fly from sideline to sideline.. his INT #s might go up from a move to Safety and play the Tre Boston role..

maybe.. just a thought

      The problem with all those scenarios is typically that you don't find out the player is a problem child until too late. The team trading him to you has zero reason to be honest about that. Even his teammates are likely to be fairly tight lipped unless it is off the record or it has now become widely known how bad the player's attitude/issues are. Think about Brown specifically. He wasn't widely/publicly known as a nutbag until late in his career, although ample evidence existed prior to that point.  It makes sense. Like a teammate or not, it's not wise to be out there blabbering about locker room issues in front of the public. Not a way to endear yourself to current or future teammates.

      I don’t remember what I said this year. I had us winning 6 last year. I was optimistic a little.  I probably said 6 or 7. Wasn’t feeling optimistic so much this year.

      I mean if you look at Bryce’s stats before last week, he was ranked damn near the bottom of the league in every category so you can’t fault people for thinking anything positive is bogus. I’ve heard several analyst say they don’t know how to rank the panthers because we are a confusing team. One week we look like complete dog poo the next we win 30-0. Sure we beat a horrible jets team, but what was it, 13-6 or something like that? Beat the pack, but how good are they? They lost to us and the Browns and tied with Dallas, are they frauds? Would we have beat the bills with Bryce, I doubt it. Barely beat a 3-5 falcons team in OT and those seem to be Bryce’s best games. To me, the jury is still out and I’m optimistic, we beat SF and Bryce plays will il start to really believe.
