Remember when our record under Rivera in December was right up there with like Reid and Belichick... I miss those days of being clutch down the stretch.

Remember when we’d start out 0-2 or 0-3? Yeah those late stretch runs were super rad.

96, 03, 05, 08, 15.

Thats what we’ve gotten from 26 years of loyalty.

They spoil us.

Rivera, for all his faults, is the best coach in Panthers history.  And the difference between him and Rhule could not be more stark.  Hes got Washington winning games with Taylor freaking Heinicke at QB.  His teams are always competitive.  Meanwhile we get the poo kicked out of us by the Giants and Dolphins.

I think Fox was better than Ron, but that's just me.

That said, Rhule is a disgrace.

Not trying to get Rivera back here, but yeah, you are right on both counts -- best here and he has a competitive, if incomplete team. The guy has a ton of things he could use for excuses but he goes out there and just fights for it, and his players fight for him, win or lose.

And that's in the same time frame that Rhule has had here. And both have had a year of Marty Hurney's "help." It's comparing apples to road apples.

Now, final say on the hiring of head coaches really goes to the owner, even more than any GM. Tepper got Rhule because of the perceived potential, his use of analytics and scrappy young attitude and team building resume. It fits Tepper's experience and business acumen. Richardson hired Rivera because he was an experienced NFL coach and had been a hard nosed player that the players would respect who had championship credentials and the Super Bowl ring to back it up. Richardson, a successful business man in his own right, had also been a football player drafted to a team that had a world championship.

Practical experience, man, it makes the difference in coaching and team ownership. It did take two misses for Jerry to get his first coach to take the team to the big dance, though, so this may take time.

The thing here, is it was avoidable.

Most here could see a dead in the water GM that should have never been here, a rookie owner who has no clue what he's doing, and the hiring of a college coach, who got one of the bigger contracts in the entire NFL....many thought that this would fail.  Hell, if you didn't you don't pay attention to the NFL.

How did Tepper not see it?  I'm serious.  How?

Hubris is a heady drug and a deadly one, too.

    • I think you know. Apparently winning is secondary to Bryce’s development. Same as it has been.     In a way it may be good because we didn’t need to make the playoffs and extend this fuging charade about Bryce being the guy. Better in the long run if he gets enough rope to hang himself with.
    • Dave Canales is not the problem. He just isn't
    • I know DC is overthinking this and he really needs to be OC or HC, but how do you call plays with a QB that in all reality, shouldn't be starting. Bryce is wildly inconsistent. He should lean on Rico and the run game, but if he does and wins, it presents a false narrative that Bryce is better than he is and he's potentially stuck with him for another season. If he doesn't, he looks incompetent as a play caller, but it exposes the ugly side of his QB situation that he really does need a QB that can execute at minimum a basic NFL offense with some decent consistency.  I feel a little sorry for the guy because he was anchored with Young this season and even more weight with Dalton getting a 2 year deal. He has very little to work with at the most important position on his team and it's not his doing. The trade deadline was approaching and it was plainly obvious we needed to do something but we didn't for whatever reason.  I don't think he's a complete bonehead and don't know what he's supposed to do. Win games and potentially keep Bryce or lose them by putting the weight on Bryce's shoulders. Either he succeeds or fails.  As a coach I know you're supposed to play to win the game, but do you win now at the ultimate long term detriment to your team and locker room?
