Sam Darnold may no longer be the guy for the job for the Panthers, but the team did exercise his fifth-year option for 2022. With this being the case, he at least deserves a longer look once he can return from his injury. Ideally, the Panthers could just cut ties. But they made the decision to commit and must live with it now.

Cam Newton is not the same player and his is the toughest reason of all for Panthers fans to accept. Newton is just not the same player he was back when he was MVP and took the team to the Super Bowl.

He was beaten out by Mac Jones in New England and there is a reason the Panthers moved on in the first place. It is easy to think resigning Newton would ensure he turns the team around like he has done in the past.  However, he only threw for eight touchdowns in 15 games last season.

Add in the reality of showing up next year on a team facing so much needed to rebuild, he is just not the elite guy for the job.

These are hard truths, but truths just the same. Cam isn't the Cam he once was, but no one can be that guy, he was a once in a generation player. Honestly, Cam's veteran back-up capabilities now and perhaps some goal line work.

Darnold is under contract for next year and no one is going to trade for him after this past season. Maybe with a different coach, a decent o-line and some smart play calling he can be serviceable. I don't see much to say he's got what it takes to be "the guy" but there's a case to be made that Sam, Cam and a drafted QB could be the way to go. You've got a veteran, a plummeted prodigy and a student -- heck, that's half of a good kung fu movie right there.

PJ, sorry man.

that's great to hear. cam is a tremendous leader and it's absolutely a factor in the decision.

there are better quarterbacks but none of them are available to us. beef up the line, bring in a bona fide derek anderson type backup, and see if cam's got the juice for a run.

So does sam, he’s already paid, and it leaves more cap for others and reasonably provides a slightly higher draft pick.

Okay. The way I read your post, I thought you were saying we should draft a rookie QB, and I'm of the opinion that going with a vet, be it Sam or Cam, and drafting OL would be better.

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
