Article: Panthers QBs Cam Newton, Sam Darnold appear to be thrown under bus by Robby Anderson

The Carolina Panthers’ once-promising season fell apart as the year progressed. They began the campaign 3-0 and had hopes of a postseason berth. Following their deflating 41-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Panthers finished the season at 5-12. They lost 12 of their last 14 games.

A lot of that can be credited to the poor quarterback play from the Panthers. The team mostly used a combination of Sam Darnold and Cam Newton under center this year.

While speaking to the press after the loss to the Buccaneers, wide receiver Robby Anderson appeared to sound off against his quarterbacks. According to ESPN NFL Nation reporter David Newton, Anderson was asked if he thought the team needed a change at quarterback. He gave a straightforward answer, saying “I just want to win, win the Super Bowl, be All-Pro, and be the best I can be.”

The Panthers wideout was then apparently asked if his goals could happen with the quarterbacks currently on the roster. That’s where things got a little spicy. He responded noting that he didn’t accomplish any of those goals this year.

It’s hard to argue with Anderson’s comments. Both Darnold and Newton struggled for most of the season. Darnold finished the year with seven touchdown passes and 12 interceptions while Newton had four touchdowns to five interceptions, completing only 54% of his passes.

Anderson, however, did not help his own cause, as he dropped a lot of passes this season and Panthers wide receiver DJ Moore was still able to put up 1,070 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

It’s not known at this point who will be the starting quarterback for the Panthers next season.

Imagine how much better Darnold and Cam's stats would have been if Robby had dropped 15 or so less balls.

Absolutely.

On a side note, I'm not a Robby Anderson fan, but that was a damned if you do, damned if you don't question.

There are people who work on the neutering line at the hog farm who don't drop as many balls per season as Sideshow Bob did. Put that clown on a bus.

This made my laugh really hard.  Thank you 😃

    • Former league executive and current NFL.com analyst Marc Ross recently named his top second-year breakout candidates for the upcoming campaign. Ross includes Legette, who may be helped out by his team's latest first-round selection. He writes: Legette had a slow start to his NFL career, catching 49 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns last season. Some of the struggles can be tied to his own growing pains -- he had eight drops on 81 targets, according to Pro Football Focus -- but he had also had to navigate the quarterback shuffle between Bryce Young and Andy Dalton early in Dave Canales' first season leading the Panthers. Canales recently said he believes Carolina has a DK Metcalf-like talent in Legette, who had foot surgery this offseason but was cleared to resume work in early April, and that having a full offseason alongside Young, who took a significant step forward in 2024, could lead to a breakout result in 2025. I anticipate it will also help that Carolina invested another first-round pick in a wide receiver, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, to complement Legette in the pass game. McMillan's presence, however, could take some pressure off Legette—who may be able to roam around in a more natural playmaking role. With the 6-foot-4 All-American likely to take on the bulk of the volume from Young, Legette should have some cleaner shots to break out downfield and in the box score.     https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/05/06/panthers-wr-xaiver-legette-top-breakout-candidates-2025/83475176007/?taid=681a4610ede05d000149b376&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter
