Breer on Tepper, Rhule and the Panthers quarterback options

From Teppers Fake Brass Balls (@ATh2o88): What is your prediction on what the Panthers do at the QB position this offseason? And will it be enough to save Rhule’s job this fall?

That’s a colorful name you’ve got there, Tepper. And I actually do think the Panthers owner, David Tepper, may have had an inadvertent impact on Carolina’s position with this offseason’s available quarterbacks.

Tepper still hasn’t publicly backed Matt Rhule. My feeling is that it hurt Carolina in its ability to hire staff, for the same reason it could hurt the team with quarterbacks—a lack of certainty regarding where the team will be a year from now necessarily means less stability for everyone involved. Now, maybe even if Tepper were to say something, it wouldn’t have made a difference with assistant coaches and won’t with a quarterback. But the silence certainly didn’t help with the former and won’t help with the latter.

That’s why my feeling is the Panthers will probably wind up with a quarterback who sees opportunity in Charlotte to fight for his viability as an NFL starter. Which is to say my guess is it winds up being someone like Jimmy Garoppolo.

The logic of the predictions are mind boggling

The QB that couldn’t win

1.  with a great coaching staff

2. and a loaded team

will succeed in Carolina’s 3 year and growing dumpster fire

I lay this fully at Tepper’s feet. No one else

Breer didn't say he'd succeed.

He just said he or someone on his level is likely what we'll end up with.

I don't think the logic is that deep.

1) Who wants to be/remain a starter bad enough to disregard the fact there could be a coaching change after their first year?

I don't think success is associated with this situation at all.

Someone desperate for game tape.

I mean I'd be pissed if we traded for Garoppolo but the dude is in large part a winner.  33-14 as a starting QB in the regular season and 4-2 in the postseason.

I wish I could say the train wreck was over and this season will just be the remnants playing out the damage already done.

I can't, though.

They will somehow grab another QB, climb onto another train and look for another chance to derail the franchise. And trading away our first next season, or for multiple years, is definitely in their wheelhouse.

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
