Sorry, I don’t follow

Some of these people are just arguing to argue. Darnold was coddled last summer it's just a fact. We never should have guaranteed him that option. You let him play and if he goes on to be your franchise guy you work something out. But he was atrocious like he's always been. Very different situation from Baker who has actually been successful as a starter and took a pay cut to play here. Obviously Baker was and is our best option which may not be saying very much given what we have seen the last few years but this farce competition was a waste of everyone's time that's just the truth.

We're at least a week behind schedule with playing competition battles at QB and starting O-line. Now they move BC from LT to LG and if a tackle gets hurt he's the best backup, so do you move BC outside and then move Jordan or whoever in at guard? Instant disaster if Ickey or Moton get injured. I don't like changing 2 positions on the lineup because of 1 potential injury

OBJ/Landry > DJ/Robbie

Higgins came from Clev if that is the 3 here

our TEs aren’t tilting the scales to our favor

Clev had one of the best rosters in the NFL around Baker.   And he had a great backfield that was diverse and deep.

I agree on the tight ends… but I think the WR competition is a wash or slight edge to us. OBJ was downright bad in Cleveland and Jarvis only has a single season where he eclipse 1k with the browns.

also, baker got better when OBJ went down. In all honesty, OBJ has been a shell of himself since he left NY.

OBJ couldn’t really stay healthy for the Browns if I remember correctly. It’s like bragging on Tannehill having Julio last year. I mean he was on the roster, but struggled and couldn’t stay healthy…

The numbers retroactively for Landry and OBJ with the browns are actually not that good.

A little early for the classic "players-only" meeting, isn't it? Shouldn't they wait until we are like 3-6 to have one of those.

Too early? Depends on whether they had lingering concerns from last year, I suppose.

That said, I haven't heard enough about this one to say for certain it's that kind of players only meeting.

Breer on the Mayfield decision...

The Panthers’ decision should be easier. And I think it’ll come before, not after, this week’s game against the Bills. Maybe even Monday. There won’t be any surprises. Baker Mayfield has pretty clearly been the best quarterback in camp, and for a number of different reasons. One big one came on the only possession he’s played over Carolina’s first two preseason games. On the fifth snap of that 13-play, 54-yard drive that ended in a field goal, a second-and-9 from the 50, Mayfield got the ball from the shotgun and quickly moved through what was in front of him. First read? Covered. Second read? Not there. Boom, ball’s out to the third guy in the progression, fullback Giovanni Ricci, for six yards underneath to get Carolina into a manageable third-and-3. That’s the sort of routine play the Panthers weren’t making as much last year, and that was the idea in getting Mayfield in the first place—that he could bring them at least league-average quarterback play.

And on that snap, a nondescript one, to be sure, Mayfield showed field vision, an ability to process quickly and an awareness for the situation. No one would look at that throw and say, “field general,” but that’s just what Mayfield was in the moment. That doesn’t mean he’s going to be a superstar this year. Just means he’s got a shot to be pretty good, and Carolina thinks that’ll be good enough to get a promising young roster to take a big step. And Mayfield has also acquitted himself well with his teammates and coaches, which is the clincher here. The coaches sent him the playbook in early July during a no-contact period, and when he reported a couple weeks later, they were really impressed with the grasp he’d gained for a complex scheme without anyone else’s help. He’s also shown humility coming out of a rocky exit from Cleveland, and he’s been respectful in entering a quarterback room, melding quickly with Sam Darnold and Matt Corral, even though they were all competing for the same thing. So you add that stuff to what Mayfield’s shown in camp in the way of processing and instincts and field vision? And yeah, that decision is coming really soon.

    • I mean in this economy, companies have to be smarter with their spending. Sending reporters to Charlotte to cover a moribund, Pop Warner-level franchise is the ultimate waste of money that should get execs fired. If the media were being kept out, they'd report that--it's the most self-important profession in the world. Even for the locals who know "Panthers suck yet again" stories get them no clicks. Bottom line, no conspiracy here. They're just not worth covering.
    • why cant they just let teams have their kicker kick it and then run off the field? Thats the only thing he can do and he also cant recover an onside. The kicking team will have 12 men to start, including the kicker, and then he runs off.  the new rule seems complicated. Not sure if Im going to like it or not. If they wanted more returns, they shouldve just gone back to the old way.
