I think Darnold was supposed to be Rhule's "Developmental young QB", "he was the same age as the guys in the draft, he just needs a new environment", etc..

Hell, that might have made sense if we'd have had a real "QB guru" type on staff.

We had Joe Brady and Sean Ryan.

This part is interesting, I do remember there being a lot of questioning why he waited through the bye week to fire Brady, when he could have given his new OC another full week to prepare for the transition.

Also, I wonder how Brady felt, working all week to hopefully improve the offense, just for your boss to get back from taking his vacation and can you lol.

I remember that too, and the more that comes out, I'm shifting from believing he just didn't know to that he actually just didn't care.

This part interests me...

Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer has said the best plan with quarterbacks is to draft and develop one. But under Rhule, the Panthers continued to reach, hoping they would hit on a franchise leader through free agency or a trade.

We had heard that there was debate last year among team leadership regarding drafting a quarterback. Most of us interpreted that as Tepper wanting to go the draft route with Justin Fields but Rhule and Fitterer being against it.

I'm now wondering if Fitterer might have wanted to draft a QB. Maybe Fields, maybe someone else, but a QB either way.

We dodged a bullet on Fields. He's not developing well in Chicago, he'd have done even worse here.

You really need a proved OC and QB coach on hand BEFORE you even evaluate draftable QBs. Or even try to pick up a veteran, I guess. We haven't had those guys in quite some time.

So Rhule was great at the relational side of things but bad at the Xs and Os.

Perfect college head coach.

BTW…That kinda describes Wilks as well.

Heck, you can win with that if  the head coach knows how to pick the right guys for his staff.

Rhule obviously didn't.

I don’t see any modern examples of coaches that like that who can sustain success. Good staff always leave.

The best head coaches in recent memory have always been really good coordinators. X and O guys.

Wilks is not that guy.

I mean regardless of what you think of Joe Brady.  It’s a bad look in-house.

Rhule was called on it at the time.  And his justification was such painful bullshit.  Basically an extra week of prep time doesn’t help anyone lol.

Well, with The Process, an extra week probably doesn't matter.  Or month for that matter.  Or year.

Rhule was basically nothing but a BS artist.  Tepper got into this mess by listening to another BS artist tell him he had to jump at the chance to hire this BS artist.  He wasn't savvy enough to realize the entire situation.

I guess he didn't understand that when you take the job of being an NFL HC, your life basically is put on hold between July and January.  That is the price of the job.  All the BSing in the world doesn't alter that much.

I'm only saying it's possible.

Anymore it's neither common, nor preferred, and it's definitely not what I'd want here.

I disagree with the notion that Wilks isn't a good Xs and Os guy though.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
