Scott Fitterer has repeatedly stated his belief that the best strategy for team building is to draft a quarterback and build around them. With Matt Rhule gone, I expect that to be the path we follow.

It could conceivably be with Matt Corral, but I think it's more likely we'll draft someone else this April and focus on them.

I agree with you, although I do think that Corral will stick around for a couple of years, assuming he recovers fully from his injury, and some other team doesn't come in and make a decent to good trade offer.  Corral will at least have a shot at being the backup.

Had the 49ers not gone all in on Lance, who knows where he would have been drafted?  He could have fallen down the board below Fields.  It only takes one team to elevate a guy's draft position. 

Lance is a prime example of the "hey this guy is super athletic; let's take him and teach him to be a quarterback" idea.

Could very well be the case--pending the Brady & Rogers (and maybe even Stafford) decisions, the NFC's only QB sure teams are the Cowboys, Eagles, Cardinals, Vikes (maybe), & Bears (maybe)

AFC has more secure QB spots but the NFC could be open season, QB wild west, and there aren't many good QBs out there.  Could be a lot of big swings forthcoming.

It's also why this draft may see a reverse situation compared to last year's with teams getting aggressive to get a guy they like, bet on potential and develop him.  I will tell you, this class has more than a handful that are more favorable than pretty much the entire 2022 QB class per my only bird.  McKee & Ward are quite liked, at the least in this one west coast FO.  

If you asked where Pickett fell in this class, I think you'd be surprised.

Lance was a good passer in college. His biggest issue in the talent level gap between his conference and the NFL IMO. Give him some time…

If that coaching staff thinks its a good idea and can be done then I would trust that.

This is basically the only option at this point.  I feel we are getting a guy no matter where our selection is even if that means "reaching".  Still think we are picking around 5/6/7 and still think we are getting AR.  Just makes too much sense.

If we miss on the top 2 QBs this draft, I think trading back is the right move. Stack picks and draft a Richardson/Duggan/Penix type with one of our 2nd rounders. Let them battle with Corral next year and if the results are terrible, trade the farm for Drake Maye or Caleb Williams.

But an article just recently said that Levis is a better prospect than Young or Stroud because he played with less talent around him (sarcasm)! Lance and Wilson had the "tools" to succeed but they also didn't lead their programs to bowl wins/championships.  At least Young, Stroud, Fields have played meaningful high stakes games in their collegiate careers.

It might be the right move but I doubt it happens for a ton of reasons.   For starters you need a partner that is going to give up the farm for your pick and more times then not its for a qb.  I think if they like a Richardson/Duggan/Penix type player they will just pick them and not get cute.  The combine is going to be extra interesting for us this year.

I think part of the reason the 49ers were trying to part company with Jimmy G was his contract.  If I remember right he was going to cost them a Brinks' truck and, while they did not see him as the long-term answer, they were scheduled to pay him as if he was.  Nobody else wanted that contract, either.
