Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?

After what I saw today, he seems to be turning the corner.  I think I would sign him for next season and forget giving up 3 firsts or paying $50m for a veteran free agent.

I would have to see the numbers, but we REALLY need a TE.  We could use a S.  We need healthy CBs.

Yeah we need a healthy secondary obv but we need an offense helmed by a QB who can muster more than 24 points. The best teams in the league are regularly dropping 30 points. You guys wanted playoffs but somehow expected we would walk our way into the dance with this measly output? Nah.

I wouldn’t say no… but I still think he’s a career backup.

nice article. Today we saw old Sam return. He still has happy feet when DL's get around him and really with the O Lines he had in NY and his first season him who could blame him. If his OL can protect him and give him clean pockets, I would say yes for a year or two and just a tad over minimum.

I'd be ok with re-signing him to be a very short term bridge Qb option or even a backup but no way in he!! do you give him longterm franchise starting Qb money! I would love love to see what they have in Corral with this offense!

I don’t think anyone on the board has proposed paying him starter money.  Cap friendly back up money only.

The fumbles really torpedoed the team in the end.

No denying that.

Wish our Defense could've not allowed the Bucs to march down the field at will throughout the game, though.

You're right.  It must've been some other poster named trueblade.

You must be very smart 'cause you suck at "playing dumb".

When your LT completely misses and your QB gets blasted in 1.4 seconds that's not on Sam.

When your center snaps the ball early that's not on Sam.

He had a pick that was a good read he just missed the throw

The real question is who could viably be the 2023 starter if it's not Sam Darnold. We may not want him but we may have to keep him around in case something like starting Corral or the next rookie doesn't work out.

This 100%. There will be teams that do worse than 2022 Darnold next year.

The need for starter level QBs far exceeds the number available.

It's easy to say we need to upgrade Darnold. It's not as easy to make it happen.

There is absolutely no guarantee even a highly drafted rookie QB will outplay Darnold (especially next year), or that we would be able to land a FA QB we wanted (hasn't happened the last 3 offseasons).

No one in their right mind wants to coronate Darnold as the starter next season.

But counting on Corral and/or discounting Darnold would be foolish too.

We did a lot worse at QB, especially with Baker, before Sam started even this year.

    • Well bois, we gave the Devils their due! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... The jersey boys have been trying to jack our steeze for a few years now. They've followed our blueprints and studied our tape. Every offseason, they pounce on our sloppy seconds in a Newark minute. Quick with the puck, ferocious on the forecheck and stifling team defense. Down to the colors, this is this closest we'll come to having to play ourselves in Ole Stanley's Hockey Hoedown. As the postseason began, Rod stood flexing in the gym mirror and saw this guy staring back from the void... (Shutters) When beating us at our game didn't work, Timo and the Tri-State Trash tried to tango instead. Outside of a bitchass cheapshot on Freddie, that poo didn't work either. Their goon squad was getting wrecked by our bantam weights. As much as we all wanted to see Svechy or Staal Bunyan literally break someone in half after the Great Dane went down, they didnt need to. Our munchkins were monsters! Jarvis obliterating giants at the blue line, Logan laying the Stank on dudes twice his size and Blakers blasting Timo into next season. It was beautiful to see! (Side note: Does JBlo wear lead weights under his pads? 170lbs shouldn't be able to hit that hard!) We closed it out in 5, for the gentleman's sweep. Only team in the league to win a series in each of the past 7(?) seasons! And, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year... Onto the awards: Key To The Series : 6 for 19 - .316% IT FINALLY WORKED!!! MVP : 16/180 g/s - .911 save% - 2.53 gaa Seriously, without this dude, we would've won in 3! (Trust me bro) 3rd Star : 6/94 g/s - .936 save % - 1.59 gaa The Great Dane   2nd Star : 3 g - 5 a - +1 - 20:38 toi/g - 18 hits - 3 bs - 58.1% fo 3 PP goals and the 2OT series winning goal! WOOAAAHHH NELLY!!!!   And, your 1st Star of the series : 5 g - 1 a - +3 - 16:48 toi/g - 16 hits - 1 bs - 1 tk - 50% fo Zero, I repeat, zero penalty minutes for the series! MISSSTAAAHHH SVEEECHNIKOOOV!!!!!! Onto The Next: Now, we wait for the Habs to make it a nasty 7 game slog, while we recuperate. And, hopefully, get Nikishin, and some of the other black aces some real peactice time. We are gonna need those guys at some point. Because, if you think the Devils were dirty, hoooo boy, wait till you see what's next...
    • I don’t watch college football anymore (used to be Stanford STH but meh), but my wife is Hawaiian and her favorite color is purple, so I guess I knew Tet was my new favorite player to root for when he came out in a purple suit and lei and threw up the Shaka.
    • AJ Green is who I think of as well; the body control, fluidity of movement, hands catcher, always high pointing the ball with the occasional insane/acrobatic type of grab, etc
