He was for TB, don't you think?

And no, but that's because I don't believe "once a SB winner, always a SB winner."

Context is a big deal to me.

Gruden had his championship season, then plunged the team so deep into mediocrity that it took over a decade to even start digging out.

On the flipside, Mike Tomlin hasn't led the Steelers to a Super Bowl in a while, but he has won two and even outside of that always has the team in contention.

Even if it were only one ring though, I'd much rather have a Tomlin than a Gruden.

We used to complain that Jerry Richardson seemed "just happy to be included" at the NFL tablr. When I see us talking like someone could come in, hang around for a couple of years, get a ring and then take off, maybe even leaving us worse off, definitely put us in the position of having to search all over again, we sound like the girl that's just happy somebody invited us to prom, even if it was some loser we didn't even like.

Are we such a poverty fanbase that someone who gets us a single championship deserves our eternal undying gratitude and devotion?

Guess we're the girl you f--- rather than the one you marry.

And I suppose for some, that's enough.

Just not me...

I'll say this from experience as a St. Louis Blues fan since 1969......fans say they will sell their souls and be happy into eternity if their team wins just one championship.  After 50 years, the Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019.  Four seasons later, their eternally happy fans are not.  We are probably not as fatalistic as we were prior to 2019, and maybe that is part of the problem.  We are now comparing everything to 2019, and with that comes expectations.

Panther fans compare everything to 2015.  It would not be a lot different had we actually prepared for Denver and won that Superb Owl.  Sure, there would be less sting and a smile from winning one, but it would not make change the mood much if the years after that remained the same.

When the down years are legitimate wild card berths, then the mood will change.

No argument with any of that...

Exactly!! He’s already putting stuff out there trying to calm Michigan down.. but I don’t trust him.. probably playing both sides!! Nothing wrong with that I suppose to get a fat paycheck from Tepper or Michigan!!. I just don’t think he’s the best option for the Panthers !!

Personally, I'd be satisfied with a Super Bowl win.

Sure, would I love to be the Packers or Patriots and be a playoff team every year?  Hell yeah. But a Super Bowl is hard.  Think about how long Lions, Browns, Vikings, Cardinals, etc. fans have been cheering for their team and still don't have one.  Look at how long in between the Chiefs first and second (at least I think it was their 2nd with Mahomes) Super Bowl victories.  Look at how long Eagles fans waited.  Bills fans still waiting.

I'm cool with just one, man.  I love the Panthers and to me it is like a story.  I wait and wait and wait and one day it will have good ending and that is the team winning the Super Bowl.  Everything after that moment will be sports.  But imagine getting to like 70 years old (no offense to anyone that age right now) and still waiting for a Panthers Super Bowl victory?  Hell nah.

So I like I said.  I get it.  You want sustained success.  But a Super Bowl victory >>> anything else.

I've been a fan of this team since they were awarded in '93.

No one our roster was alive when there wasn't a Carolina Panthers, and most of them were in middle and high school when Cam was drafted. Many weren't in the league the last time we won a playoff game.

So yes, give me one Super Bowl win. Having one will change the culture of the franchise and establish a new standard of, "we should be contending for a title" instead of "we competed, but shucks, maybe next time". It worked for Baltimore, who lets remember were the Browns and never won anything.

All I know is that for the GB/DET game this weekend, despite how hot they've been, very few (including in Michigan) expect DET to win for two reasons:

1. They're playing GB, and everyone defers to GB winning and having to be convinced otherwise.

2. GB has Rodgers, who only won one but people are more shocked when he loses than when he wins.

That's the expectation culture that I hope the franchise gets to someday, much like Carolina, Duke, Alabama, Clemson, and others do in their sports.

If having Harbaugh here for 4-5 years raises the standards of what we accept a redefines "normal" in a good way, I'm all for it. 30 years of hope/"catching fire in bottle"/"we can make some noise"/"we do better when no one expects us to win" is plenty enough time.

If he's a short-timer that raises the franchise's profile to attract a successor like Reid or Tomlin or the Hoodie or Carroll or his brother, so be it.

I must have missed something and I'm not going back through this thread, did someone actually say they wouldn't want a coach if he only won one super bowl? there's no way.

No, not really.  Just that winning one would not be the magic elixir a lot of people think (and have thought in other sports franchises).  While an Owl win would give everybody a smile for years to come, the mood would not be altered all that much a few years later.

For example, Cubs fans are not necessarily in any better mood now than they were before 2016.  Sure, they remember than World Series win fondly, but then it raised their expectations and may have soured their attitudes since even worse.  The only cure for that is sustained success.  Not necessarily a championship every year or three, but the realistic hope and pursuit of more.

Then again, there is the impact the Pats sustained success has had on their fans.  As a group, they became insufferable.  Although, in fairness to their long-time and long-suffering fans, that was probably from the hangers-on that get inherited with sustained success.

    • I used to think Juan was a Zod alt. Agree he's a great poster.
    • Hawks said nah we good and sent him to the shadow realm aka the Wizards. Cold blooded. I mean they're 2-2 in a series with a young up and coming Knicks team largely through 34 year old CJ McCollum. Even if they ultimately lose the series at least they are there and have something to build on. I think Hornets fans are just beaten down and lack the objectivity to assess the situation. They think we are going to get so much worse if and when we finally change gears. Worse how? We've already been a lottery team for years now. We've already been looking to win our first playoff series in about a quarter century. We already can't get past the play in and in failing to do so we have completely embarrassed ourselves twice looking like we don't even belong. Honestly there is absolutely no excuse for a team like the Magic to be more competitive and successful than us in the playoffs. Absolutely disgusting. But that's just me. I was fuging lit when we got the Hornets back in Charlotte but that is old old news. It's time for these boys to get into a playoff series. Enough is enough. If they can't do it for 2026-27 then they need to make wholesale changes regardless.
    • Not one single pick that is asking me why we drafted a guy in the first place. It was a guy we needed and/or a guy that had certain traits making them stand out. Best of all, I feel everyone we drafted are capable of stepping onto the field this year and have a meaningful role (even Kuwatch on special teams). Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but I'm not seeing any huge flags on guys because they're risky projects or massive overreaches.
