This makes sense when you consider that Al Holcomb was the interim DC and that the Rooney Rule was updated in 2021 to require at least one external minority candidate be interviewed for a coordinator job.

So the same will happen for the OC position. Probably sooner than later.

Interesting and good to hear as I’m not a fan of Manuel at all, he was pretty terrible with the Falcons as DC

You never know, that was like 25 years ago.  Wouldn't be the first coordinator to go back to his former team.

Not that I expect it to happen, but it would be awesome.  I'm sure he'll be a DC again.  Maybe he goes with Sean Payton, but if he doesn't?  There aren't a whole lot of teams looking for a DC.  Wouldn't hurt to inquire.

Technically Payton has to go somewhere himself first.

What's funny to me about this idea is that Fangio's defensive concepts are used all over the league, but the young coordinator who found an exploitable flaw in them and rode it to success was...Ben Johnson 🤔

I wonder if Manuel has any connections to any of the candidates so far? He was in Seattle with Fitt but that's all I found.

There are many connections beyond work/college ones among NFL coaches. There are a lot of friendships made along the way and friend of a friend introductions are really commonplace.

My thinking is that he's being interviewed here as part of getting back to the Panthers identity and reinforcing what Wilks has been rebuilding. Or it could be a Frank Reich thing just as easily.

If you're looking for links to Manuel though, I think this is the guy you should probably be focused on.

They were teammates for a year in Carolina. Manuel also played a few years in Seattle while Morgan was in the Seahawks front office.

(which, incidentally, would also link him to Scott Fitterer)

This is called homework.  Learn to do it before posting, younglings.

Do you think Payton goes somewhere this year, or does he wasn’t until next year when he is done with his contract with NO?

    • I think those silver helmets look great. The logo is fairly primitive looking but I understand why it is used.  The dayglo type blue top/bottom, I think looks like a cartoon. IOW not good. White on white is a classic look, no issue. Black on black I can take but prefer black pants with a blue top. Or white pants with the blue top.  That is about as much fashion content as I am comfortable posting. Maybe go to E or Bravo for this stuff.
    • Remember when the NFC South was the toughest division (circa 2002-2006 when every NFC Championship game featured one of the four of us?)
    • You are a fair point argument guy, but I disagree that Bryce got us out of that Miami hole. You know who Rico Dowdle is, right?  Just a small quibble.    IMO when I look at him and see his output in a typical game I imagine what he did that a replacement level guy wouldn’t or couldn’t have done.  And I have trouble seeing much difference.  So assuming they can’t replace him with someone’s backup, not everybody’s but there are guys sitting, assuming they can’t replace him for probably less money would potentially be an erroneous assumption.    But based more on his relationship with the team and the guys making the decisions, the question of will they? I tend to see them sticking with him.  I never wanted him at all. But after all the misery of the Bryce era so far, I don’t have a problem with waiting until the season is complete to decide. Bring it on, I can take it.  So I am not ranting that he needs to go, although I have certainly done that and can’t say he has changed my mind to this point.  He still could.  We’ll see.
