The QB School : Breaking down AR and Levis

Let's take a moment to be honest.  We never really spent a bunch of time trying to develop Cam.  We let Cam be Cam and tweaked a few things.  Cam said the first time he ever had to learn to identify the Mike linebacker was in New England.  Then he said New England was one of only a couple of teams in the entire league that tasks their QB with that job, which was the kind of stuff that made his learning curve with the Patriots so steep.  WTF?  He literally said that.

True or not.  You can watch most of the guys that rely heavily on their feet through college and when the heat gets turned up their footwork goes out the window.  Their instincts that they have had their entire football life take over and it is able to get them through those years, but the pros it will not.  The entire games is faster and the windows are much tighter.  Why do you think so many of these college phenoms bust?  I find it crazy that everyone makes excuses for Cam not being all world in the NFL.  His line sucked, he had no receivers, now apparently no one ever coached him either.  Bottom line he did not play smart, always took the big hit when running, was not accurate with the football and did not know how to turn it around in a game when he started out poorly.  Sure he could have had better pieces around him at times, but he is not faultless in how his career ended.

Here's my concern. Most of the guys significantly older benefitting from an extra COVID year make big leaps. They look like men amongst boys in terms of their poise and polish. Bennett, Pickett, Hooker... big leaps in production and they looked very polished and poised out there.

Levis didn't. Levis still looks like a raw prospect. If he was a redshirt sophomore with only one year of starting experience I'd view him much differently. But unfortunately, he's a super senior who will be 24 when he puts on an NFL jersey and he looks like a 20 year old redshirt sophomore on the field.

I feel like a lot of folks bought into the Levis hype after last year just assuming he's make a big leap this year and when he didn't they didn't adjust their opinions. Well, we like the tools so we'll just ignore that he didn't look a bit better this year and arguably regressed.

I’d much rather Carr if we don’t draft a QB in the first

If he gets to free agency (I think that happens on Feb 15) I am all in on that.  However, we would have to engage in a bidding war---and we could make that work, but it would cost us Shaq in my guesstimate.

Carr will more then likely sign with a team well before the draft

I think Aussie was saying, "if we don't like any of the picks in our range in the draft...(deciding to pick one later or not at all).

Yes, Carr will have a team before the new NFL year begins in March, in my opinion.  He will entertain a bidding war.

I love these QB school videos, by far the best tools for us regular fans to educate ourselves about QB prospects on YouTube. I’ve been watching everything available on all four top guys for months now so my opinion is mostly formed and these two videos didn’t shift my opinion at all. My top choice is trading up for Stroud by far.

Levis just doesn’t do it for me. He often looks lost as a QB. Doesn’t seem to have command of his college offense so I don’t have much faith he’ll command his NFL offense.  He has tools to work with, on the surface he looks like he has potential but I’m not sure he’s got it between the ears. It’s possible he develops into a really good QB and if he can nail the cerebral part of the game then his physical tools give him a high ceiling.  My QB4 for this draft though, I don’t like his chances.

Richardson would be my preference if we can’t get Stroud and Young doesn’t make some crazy fall down to 9 that would be highly unexpected. I’d be happy to take Richardson at 9 or thrilled to drop down to the 12-15 range and grab him there.  He’s a peaks and valleys QB, his peaks look amazing. He can run with the best of them, that’s something that should translate right away, and some of his throws are just beautiful. He has really good snap and power on his throws and sometimes his placement is really good. But his valleys are just horrible.  His decision making has a long way to go and his accuracy is poor overall. No consistency. If we take Richardson, we as fans are going to have to be patient. He’s going to look like trash in year one. He might not even play. In the preseason he’ll have some runs that wow us but look terrible passing the ball. We’re going to have to be patient and not call him a bust just because he looks terrible the first year or two. He’s young and has really high potential though and I like his chances better than Levis.

I don't buy into the Justin Field hype. He makes big plays with his legs. That's about it. He isn't a great passer and gets hurt too much. The latter is really bad for a QB that is more dangerous with his legs than his ability to throw from the pocket. I'd be hesitant to give up anything for him unless it was 3rd round pick  or lower.

I will say that he's had the misfortune of playing for a bad franchise in terms of QB play and offensive coaching. Our team is better in terms of depth which would help him.  A coach like Frank Reich would surely make him better .But I don't think adding him makes us a championship contender overnight. He'd need a couple of years to really learn how to play within the pocket use his legs as a 2nd, not 1st, option.

You mean like how he played in college? He rushed for more yards as a pro this year than he had his entire college career. Sometimes circumstance dictates what you need to do to have a fighting chance each week in the NFL. He ran this year out of necessity. And they were in most games because of it. He’s already said before the season ended you won’t see him run like this next year and the coaching staff agreed.

The only negative is cost...if he took a cut we take him in a heartbeat.

Remember the Eagles game a handful of years ago where we started out poorly and had one of our biggest comebacks in the 4th quarter with Cam? Do you not remember all the times Cam slid, popped up and did his first down celebrations? Nobody is saying Cam is without fault but he did have poor offensive coaching and less than desireable weapons around him. Let’s not make stuff up.

Well said, this is my exact concern with him as well.

I’m hoping one of the QB needy teams before us sign him. Would be perfect for a team like the Texans. Then they can focus on building their D-Line which is the 49er model driving a lot of Ryan’s success.

I am hoping we move up and spend mostly draft picks this year.  On Kiper’s podcast he mentioned talking with GMs that he was hearing a lot of talk on how this is a weak draft overall.

Again I hope we move up and get really lucky with Levis going top 2 and Bryce or CJ dropping.

I am about half way through the AR video and I'm liking what I hear. So far it sounds like footwork is the biggest issue. If Reich can help him fix that I like what I see. Seems to move around in the pocket well, goes through some reads. Kinda of reminds me of Cam a little, hot and cold on the fundamentals but even off his back foot/toes his arm can get the ball there. On that note footwork and consistency in throwing platform seem to be a BIG deal, so if he can't get that fixed it is going to lead to a lot of frustration.

Still got 10 minutes left.

He is more like Josh Allen. The Cam comparison literally only comes from them being black and I wish people would look more at things like Arm strength, throwing motion, movement, fluidity, etc.

He is like Cam in that he can run. But he's more like Allen in how he runs, how he throws, the reads he's making, etc. I don't want another Cam who was slow to read defenses every year but, and even in, 2015. Love the guy and what he did but I'd rather have an Allen type such as Richardson than a Cam type.

    • We'd be Super Bowl Champs. Dalton SB MVP. I would have this huge ginger headed tattoo on my very large belly of him holding the Lombardi. I would have 10 of the worlds hottest queens chasing after me when my shirt came off and my huge man boobs slapping Dalton in the face. .Good times.    That's what would have happened if Bryce was benched. Thanks Tepper for ducking me.
