Why we won't get the #1 pick

I said this the other day. There are plenty of suitors with higher picks for them to trade down with.

There are also more asses with hot seats in other teams than there are here. They will be willing to give up more than us.

People need to go ahead and pre-order their Carr jerseys

I think Carr, along with the right draft picks, could be a solid pick-up. You just end up missing the window people get when you have a QB on a rookie contract. But when you only have five picks this year and a new defensive scheme, what are you going to do? Re-sign Sam Darnold for $10,000,000?

Yes. I'd say sign Darnold for two years with an out in Year 2. Build the core of the team, don't win too many games in 2023, take Maye or Williams in 2024. That's the closest you will get to potential All-Pro QB's to go 1 and 2. It's been a while since a draft has had two guys like them coming out.

I wouldn’t say Fitty’s name isn’t in this category.
He goes and gets another  slap d!ck QB for a 3rd consecutive year or sits on his hands. And we go out a win 7-8 games.  He probably won’t be around here next year to draft one.

My biggest fear is we get to Atlanta and they screw us by trading down and someone grabs Richardson at 8.

yeah you best believe that Terry Fontenot is going to do everything in his power to make sure that Richardson doesn't fall into Carolina's lap at #9...  just saying

First round QBs are a crapshoot when you don’t have an Andrew Luck or T Law type of guy. Nobody this year is that guy. Stay at 9 and grab who you like best left.

It’s a 100000x less of a crap shoot than 2nd-7th rd QBs or cast offs you pick up in FA.

I can see moving up to #3 if Carolina falls in love with Young or Stroud and Houston takes the one they don't covet. The question then becomes: what cost are the Panthers willing to pay if one of the teams with a higher selection wants to slide up like the Colts or the Raiders?

On the flip side, with Irsay apparently smitten by the idea of drafting Will Levis, that might also mean that CJ Stroud is available at #9 should Seattle + Las Vegas not go QB in round one. If one of those teams does take Stroud (or Levis if available instead), there's still Anthony Richardson to gamble on.

We can't trade for the Number 1 pick now because we need draft picks for defense. Our list of holes on that side of the ball just got bigger. Now you probably should take BPA to build out the core of the team as best you can, or trade down if you're sure you can get who you want, and develop those guys while probably not being great. I just, I don't understand the scheme transition while you're looking for a new QB and only have five draft picks.

That pretty much sizes it up.

We needed a DT, DE, LB (maybe 2), and a FS keeping our same 4-3 defense.  We now need a FS, NT, DE, and maybe LB.  We needed depth regardless, so how exactly does switching to a 3-4 give us MORE holes on defense?  It looks about the same except Burns is in his more natural position and Chinn can play LB which is his more natural position.

The more likely scenario is the Panthers follow the previous model of trading to position 3 first…

then trade up from 3 to 1

more light will come to light during the combine

I mean, did anyone see the 49ers moving up for Lance ?

or KC moving up for Mahomes

You're going to give up a nice haul for 3 and then turn around and give up more for #1.  I think that is way too steep to give up draft picks for the #1 spot.

I see us going up to 5 for Stroud

I think that's all we'll need to pull it off, either Stroud or Young will be there  because colts will go Levis. Don't know which QB Houston will be sold on, but I think it's most likely Young. We just need to get ahead of the Raiders.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
