I’ve seen a lot of push back regarding trading up for a QB giving away future 1sts and potentially a 2nd this year to move up for a QB?

But what “holes” are we concerned about?

 

digging deeper looking at this roster and roster construction across the league.

what are the most important foundation pieces In Todays league and what are the most common drafted positions in the top 15 in todays NFL?

 

LT- blindside protection.  Franchise LTs are up there.

Edge Rusher- Franchise number 1 edge rusher.  Getting after the QB

WR- teams go try to find that go to #1 WR

CB- CB1, A true shutdown CB’s

now let’s review our last 5 1st rd picks who are under contract and or looking to be Extended 

Ickem (LT), Horn (CB), Brown, Burns (Edge), DJ (WR1)

 

now let’s move onto our “holes”

how many teams across the league, their #2 WR was a guy they drafted in rd 1?

How many top teams in the NFL drafted their TE in rd 1?

How many teams invested their 1st rd pick in a CB2-3

How many teams across the league without a QB invested a 1st rd pick on a #2 edge rusher?

Buffalo’s only 1st rd pick on offense is Allen and only 1st rd picks on D are CB, Edge, DT, and LB

The Bengals only 1st rd picks on Offense  is their WR1, LT, and QB.  Defensively, the only guy in the First 2 rds is their Safety who was a 2nd rounder and hitting FA.

 

point is.  We are in good position to trade future picks to move up for the QB we like.

My only concern with trading up for a QB, is if it fails. If one falls to us at 9, we can select another next year. If we trade up, we're stuck for most likely 3 years without a second shot at a top prospect. I have no issues with drafting a guy and whiffing, but what's the backup plan if that happens and you do not have a 1st for the foreseeable future?

Point is, if we trade up to 1 or 3, we better be certain. Fitt's job is going to ride or die on the success of that pick.

vs spending. 2-3 1sts for a QB1-2 in a class?

Lol. We have spent looking for a QB since Cam left a 2nd Rounder, a third rounder, two 4th rounders, a 5th rounder, 6th rounder, a horrible horrible horrible FA contract, $19 million guaranteed on top to another, and many restless nights with poo all to show for it and we still have mouth breathers talking about "lets not move up in the draft"

I have always said look no further than the franchise tag cost and you will see where the value is in 1st round picks.

I completely agree that now is the time to make a move for a QB. My only caveat is I haven’t studied any of this draft class to know if one is truly worthy of a trade up. If we believe one can be a top 10 QB, then it’s really a no brainer, if however the brass correctly assesses this class and decides none of them can be that, then I’m open to all scenarios.

Indeed. We also have mouth breathers saying "I've fallen in love with the latest highly rated Draft prospect. Let's trade three first round picks for him".

This is where I'm at, I trust that if we trade up its because Reich really believes in who we are moving up to select, if we stay pat we rated them all the same, I'm fine with either. But banging the drum about "NEVER TRADE UP" is the dumbest poo off all time.

Personally I see CJ Stroud and Bryce Young as QB 1 and 2 but I only see Stroud as the one that’s worth trading up for. Bryce is a magician but he’s going to miss games in the NFL. He’s just too small and the pass rush gets even better at the pro level.  If we can’t get Stroud by trading up I prefer we wait until 9 and select one of the project guys and keep our picks. We can do damage with 2 second round picks and 2 thirds. We need offensive  guard help desperately if we are going to start a rookie QB at some point. Losing both starting guards in week 18 will have an impact into the upcoming season.  Let’s not act like Bozeman isn’t the perfect fit for the Carolinas either.

We do have young or reliable talent at the most important positions. We could use more depth however. 

But you’re not using premium draft capital on “depth”

      I get it's subjective and I said "PFF rated him as" one of the top deep ball passers during that time, which is an accurate statement.  They are still a group of professionals that look at film and data in order to make their judgements/ratings.  These people whose data has been incorporated into a lot of teams' staffs view Bryce's deep throws as some of the best in the league during that stretch.  That tells me that he can probably throw a deep pass vs the Huddle's version of he is small and didn't do it his rookie year so he must not be able to.  That and literally seeing him do it just makes me feel he is more than capable of doing so.   Do you think PFF is skewing their opinion to prop up a QB in a bottom tier franchise?  It's just another group's opinion and I feel is pretty respected around the league currently.  It's not the gospel truth or anything.

      I still remember how happy I was that gettlegut was not the GM once he picked Jones, that was a firing pick and well..... If not for the raiders drafting Clelin Ferrell, it was the biggest draft day mistake in the last 20 some years.

      He had 251 passing yards. 3 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns. All in all a very impressive game. Problem is I do not envision his rushing ability translating like that over the course of the upcoming season. Yeah it will be something to account for from time to time but one it's not sustainable and two you don't want to put his durability to the ultimate test against a motivated defender willing to take a penalty and a fine. And plus with our backfield. Two 1k yard rushers. That's what they're here for. Then we have a much improved WR room. That means Bryce has to elevate those passing numbers substantially. The fact of the matter is regardless of circumstances it did take him 23 games to surpass Kyle Allen's single season passing yardage from 13 games in 2020. And that is not a high bar by any means. Whatever QB tier Bryce ends up in from here amongst his peers this upcoming season when it's all said and done it will be with his arm.
