Great topic.

I know I'm in the minority on two things - not high on Josh Downs and I think Tillman is the better NFL WR at Tennessee.

I'd prefer to trade the 39 for Jeudy or Nuk, but if we are picking there, we take the BPA of WR/TE.

Thanks.  I'm not entirely on board but appreciate the added perspective.

I do think Tillman offers a lot more than some of the other bigger guys in those mid rounds.  I look and compare him to Hutchinson and Perry, and do view him as a notch up.  He's got some X potential that many others in the class simply don't have.

honestly thinking real hard about a CB in the 2nd, value is better and is a huge position of need. I never wanna see cj henderson again.

if one of the hard coded 1st round receivers is there (totally plausible) then I’d do that.

Pending a WR signing (or two), I think it's fair to say we've set ourselves up to get, not BPA, but the BOSPA, come April.  Although I'll admit this EDGE class is tantalizing.  (Cue the new term)

So then, let's take a gander...

Consensus-ish Big Board (My estimated rankings based on The Athletic, Ringer, and a few other spots) green means trending up.

10. Jaxon Smith-Njigba WR ^

12. Quentin Johnston WR

14. Michael Mayer TE

17. Jordan Addison WR

23. Jahmyr Gibbs RB ^

25. Dalton Kincaid TE ^

26. Zay Flowers WR ^

30. Darnell Washington TE ^

33. Jalin Hyatt WR

40. Josh Downs WR

48. Luke Musgrave TE

52. Sam LaPorta TE ^

58. Zach Charbonnet

Takeaways:

No doubt team boards will vary, but I see a pretty damn substantial cliff after LaPorta.  Rashee Rice & Tillman are good but a major tier down.  Same goes with the TE and RB groups in my opinion.  Guys like Tyler Scott, Kraft, Achane, Spears, Schoonmaker could be great, but simply aren't in that higher tier.

I know we already gave a lot away, I'm trying to stay realistic.  However, if we want to land a top weapon in this class, I think it could be in our benefit to move up a tad.  I'm not saying jump to 20 for a boatload, but if receivers are getting selected in the 20s, which I can see happening easy, then I say let's get aggressive again.

So my question RE: Rankings, -- Is it worth holding on, or would it be in our favor to use something like a 4th (this year or future), or maybe a 4th+6th type combo to slide up a bit in our favor?

I think 3rds are too high with capital given away for our shiny QB1, but it we want an effective weapon, do you want to swing high, or take a group of guys a bit lower tier in this draft?  After 39, 93 is our next selection.  That's 1.5 rounds right there.

For me, it is starting to look quite appealing to grab a top guy somehow given who we've brought in.  A really solid foundation sans WR seems to have melded together.

Creating a young trio like Stroud, Sanders, & Flowers could have so much freaking potential.

Thoughts?

I think your list shows that we don't need to trade draft picks to move up. Washington, Hyatt or Downs at 39.

Either Downs or Hyatt should be there at our 2nd rd pick, and I think you have to take one if so. The drop off in WR is just too great between those guys and whatever would be available by the time our 3rd rd pick comes around. That frees us up to draft bpa at LB, DL, OL, CB, and RB depth the rest of the draft.

Kayshon Boutte in the middle rounds also has some potential.  Plus I like his last name.  Another LSU guy for Marshall to play with.

Was expected to be a 1st rounder this season but wasn’t targeted and got a little lazy but definitely is a steal in this draft

Terrible season and terrible combine ruined his value, im surprised he actually came out. I’d love to take a flier on him because I do think the pedigree is still there.

Yeah he was great the year before.  If we can grab him with one of our 4s, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

This is what I’m thinking myself. I also can’t see use utilizing as many WRs as we all want lol. We are going to need to run the ball which should be one of our strengths. And protect our roomie qb some by running and letting our o- line do what it did last year when we finally played Booze.

This sounds like a dream scenario but we need to sure up the CB spot as well. With some major talent expected to fall we could see Ringo available at 39. We definitely can’t depend on what we had last year. And Jackson is coming off achilles injury shouldn’t be expected to be good to go until late in the year.

Naturally I would like Downs and I like Charbonnet later on.

    • I bet he wants 8+ million AND a team with a playoff roster.   Dan should just look at other options, including future cuts.
    • Lol. I asked you to show me where Frank said Dalton presented a much greater threat than Bryce Young (your words) and you give me your interpretation of something completely different that he said. Most normal people would listen to Reich there and see that as standard coachspeak conveying confidence in his back-up QB and your brain translates that into Reich calling out Bryce’s limitations. No poo he’s gonna say Andy can do more than one thing…why the hell would Reich say to everyone “hey if you see Andy coming in on 4th and short, IT MEANS QB SNEAK!”. If your interpretation is correct, then you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think that’d be a headline in multiple articles across multiple publications. Yet not a single site reported on it or even referenced anything he said here…that’s why you had to dig deep to find the source material rather than a single reference to it from an outside source. There’s a reason why The Huddle was the only place talking about it lol we are totally known for our rational levelheaded takes and NOT sensationalizing everything like it’s a damn soap opera (cue the pic of Nicole Tepper hugging Bryce). I guess I could claim “CRA says he thinks Bryce Young is trash and a huge bust” and if anyone asks me to source you saying that, I’ll just give my own multiple paragraph interpretation breaking down one of your posts. Btw having a difference of opinion is not being “wildly dishonest”…what a crazy suggestion for a mod of a discussion board to make. Claiming someone said something that they didn’t say? Yeah that’s being objectively dishonest.
