So many rumors, so little real news.

It’s the most dead part of the offseason and probably year as a whole. Nothing to talk about much outside of theoretical moves with minor evidence.

Having an elite front that can consistently apply pressure greatly lessens the need for superior talent in the secondary. Remember how good our 2013 defense was with a bunch of no-names in the backend? We had an excellent unit up front to mask deficiencies in the back.

If they can create a consistently strong pass rush, the backend doesn't have to elite.

Nit saying we can't use more talent and CB, but I don't see any starting quality CBs laying around.

With Donte and Jaycee being recurring question marks we could easily bring in Marcus Peters, Casey Hayward or even Byrce Callahan and still be somewhat competitive on the back end. Off the street any of those options serve as an immediate upgrade over Keith & CJ. Specifically CJ.

It's a reason the staff isn't actively searching for replacements. But I do agree CB is far and away a more pressing need than edge.

As long as Burns, Chinn, Shaq and Luvu are on the same field we can manufacture pressure in this scheme.

People were so skeptical pre-draft that the team needed another legitimate value plug at CB. Some people got angry at the suggestion.

Even without the Horn injury. Achilles are not a one-off-season kind of recovery injury.

it’s probably going to be really rough in the secondary this season unless something unexpected happens

Yep, although if we can't find any decent CB's at some point, upgrading the pass rush opposite Burns can also help out a young and no so great secondary.  That with some quality Safeties that we have, it's not an end of the world scenario, but it's certainly not a great CB outlook right now.

Can we really afford to pay both Burns and Hunter long-term?

No longer an issue--Jets got him--I think.  Saw it on facebook, where they gave a second, third, and fourth rounder--can't find it anywhere else (just started looking)

    • On the surface given our struggles I get why people would initially hear this and be apprehensive. But we do need players being vocal and being confident and speaking up. That is what builds a culture. Especially when it involves young players getting opportunities which was not always a thing with past coaches. But the head coach still needs to assert authority and take ownership of his group and make smart decisions on gamedays. It's gonna be a long season so we might as well just let it play out and revisit this later.
    • He can’t.  Not by NFL standards.  More than enough evidence at this stage to make that determination.  For even a chance at one Bryce has to get a perfect look and that’s not NFL football.   His weak arm gets nerfed too much when you get him off an ideal setup.  Bryce’s ball placement and accuracy are horrible downfield.  That applied at Bama.  Bama WRs just had room to adjust.  Bryce defenders just repeat this lie about his Bama deep ball.  NFL balls have to be well placed to dudes only NFL open.  Bryce leads the NFL is bad throw % since arriving.  His accuracy and balls are garbage vs his peers.  Countless plays for years where dudes are NFL open downfield and Bryce just lets the DB have just as good as a shot at it or takes the WR out of bounds.  It’s not a debate.  Dudes flat out open this year on repeat.  He can’t make the throws.  So the talk about not having speed is auto debunked and a distraction.  Open is open and Bryce has gotten the looks
    • In 2021, Young only completed 10 passes of 20 yards or more, resulting in a 36.1% completion rate on such throws, according to AL.com. This was significantly less than other Alabama quarterbacks like Mac Jones in 2020 (29 completions, 58%) and Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 (24 completions, 57.1%).
