REPORT: Panthers and Brian Burns not at all close to extension

I’m not fully out on Fitterer despite my frustration with how this situation has been handled. I do wonder sometimes though how things would be had Tepper hired Andrew Berry like he reportedly wanted to back in 2020. I believe the only reason he didn’t hire Berry was because he didn’t want to get rid of Hurney at the time and they were trying to get Berry as an assistant GM — probably with the intent to promote him after they fired Hurney — which was a lateral move.

"I wouldn't have given Burrow an extension. You could trade him and net 2-3 first round picks, then use that money on linebackers, running backs and a solid veteran backup QB"

I generally agree with the argument you’re making and hope we resign Burns but you can’t really compare a good DE/Edge to an Elite franchise QB, there not even remotely close in impact.

Well if that happened and everything else stayed the same Deshaun Watson would be a panther lol

pass rushers of Burns ability don't hit the open market, if you want one, you have to "overpay" to get/keep them.

I can name several that hit the open market in the last couple years.  And there contracts are out there.   And the league isn’t and hasn’t been paying those types Bosa money.   The pass rushing specialist tier is a different pay tier.   And heck, there are some more well rounded ones than Burns that have signed very recent deals.

I like how you cherry pick his sacks. Like he hasn't improved them every year. Way to minimize his growth.

It is almost criminal how little respect Burns gets around here.

It’s not cherry picking.  It is what it is.  He had one year of double digit sacks.

Burns isn’t coming off some crazy Von Miller caliber rookie contract play.   Burns isn’t even matching journeymen pass rushers like Reddick.

and people are talking about cartoon money being cool.

Front office made a mess of this.  Because we have a weak front office.  It’s largely the same one that has been making a mess of it all the past several years.  Switching out Rhule for Frank doesn’t change the fact more issues exist in BOA that weren’t named Rhule.

Nothing we can do about Tepper.  Fitt should have gone with Rhule.

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
