2021 and 2022 drafts

Recently someone asked if a fan could do as well as some of the GMs in the league so i decided to look at the last few drafts of our current staff.  I left off this years draft because I try not to judge players in their first year, even though it looks bad so far.  Also, if I'm wrong about a player status please let me know.

2021 Draft:

  • Pick #8: Jaycee Horn - Hit
  • Pick #59: Terrace Marshall -
  • Pick #70: Brady Christensen
  • Pick #83: Tommy Tremble -
  • Pick #126: Chuba Hubbard -
  • Pick #158: Daviyon Nixon - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #166: Keith Taylor - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #193: Deonte Brown - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #201: Shi Smith - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #204: Thomas Fletcher - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #232: Phil Hoskins - Miss (off team)

2022 Draft

  • Pick #6: Ikem Ekwonu - Hit
  • Pick #94: Matt Corral - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #120: Brandon Smith - Miss (off team)
  • Pick #189: Amare Barno -
  • Pick #199:  Cade Mays -
  • Pick #242: Kalon Barnes -  Miss (off team)

Of the 17 players drafted 9 aren't even on the team.

Of the other 8 how many would you really consider above average?  Horn and Ekwonu have shown the most promise, but they are also the two top-10 picks.

This idea that some fans couldn't do as well is just ludicrous.  Honestly some fans would have taken Curtain or Parsons, although some fans might have took Fields.  Irony is if we would have took Fields then we wouldn't have traded for Young this year and we would still have DJ Moore and possible #1 pick next year, plus some other draft capital.  Some fans also like Slater, which meant the following year you wouldny have drafted Ekwonu.

With Ekwonu, a lot of fans were good with that pick.  Some liked Cross, some liked Ekwonu, but either way its not like the "professionals" knew better than the fans.

Honestly after those two top 10 picks you could probably go to a PFF or NFL.com big board and do about as well.

Psst, we would still have been better off taking Fields. He could have led us to the #1 pick on his own without wasting resources.

There is actually a lot of logic in that.  Teams have a habit, and often one that gets them in trouble, in thinking they are so right about a prospect being good or bad.  Fact is there is some luck in it.

Both Fields and Bryce were gamble, Bryce was alot more of a gamble.

For example we could have stayed put, and took whatever QB fell to us and saved out picks.

Right now, how many people would prefer to have Levis (and DJ)  and our #1 pick next year instead of Young?

Better chance of finding and developing a QB:  Levis + Williams or Maye + Moore or Bryce Young?

The better question at this point is which QB would you not take over Bryce Young, the picks + DJ are just adding insult to injury.

No one told them to go out and draft the smallest QB in NFL history who isnt fast and has a average arm.

Fields was worth a shot either way because they didn't have an answer at QB that year either way. Darnold is gone too.

You can go ahead and consider horn a miss knowing that surtain went right behind him and is an all-pro

Nah. You can't consider Horn a miss because of what another player is doing. Horn has the talent, he just can't stay healthy. All the injuries is why you could consider Horn a miss.

I think having cmc and Moore early in his career would have been helpful for him. Just like it would have been for young. This front office is so fly by the seat of their pants without a plan in place. If they had a plan to go for the number 1 pick they would have kept cmc and dealt burns.  Then they would have kept moore and traded one of the 1sts they got for burns for number 1. Then we would have cmc, Moore young AND a first round pick next draft or 2 in 2025 depending on the exact trade for young.

With Ekwonu trending down and Horn not finding the field, it’s beyond bad.

In addition, don’t forget two of those guys in 2022 were via trades so we gave up additional draft capital for 2 guys not even on the team anymore.

It would be nice if just 1 or 2 of the 4th to late rounders was a pleasant surprise but they have all been pretty much nada.

This goes back to the "Was Jeff Otah a bust" argument. The reality is he was a bust but it was due to injuries.

Horn is a bust so far. There isn't any question at all about that.

We just have to hope that turns around. If not, that draft will look REALLY bad in hindsight.

    • I like this kid--he will make the roster.  However, he said that his sophomore year was the first playoff game in school history. Incorrect.  Western Carolina beat them in the FCS playoffs many years ago.

    • Furyk is weird. That’s a loop.  A hitch. That’s not Young as a QB. I was raised in golf land.. the family business. Tiger was pretty classic. I’m not sure what the exact discrepancy in his swing was, pre and post intervention. I remember names of the top echelon coaches involved (Haney, Harmon).
