tl:dr all Bryce’s mechanic flaws were present at Alabama, he was just able to overcome them because of the talent. NFL is making them way worse. Stop saying “flash” potential. All he does is have moments where he shows he can do the bare minimum. 
 

On another board I asked how so many people missed the red flags on Bryce that we’re seeing, namely his footwork. It’s been interesting going back and looking at videos and seeing a whole lot of “but if there’s one thing….”

this is a really good one. Footwork starts at about 1:20

Key points 

1. Bryce doesn’t turn his hips because he struggles to see the field when he does

2. he stands on his tip toes, again, to see over the line

3. His drop back is about a step too slow

4. for someone who loves to throw on the run he’s actually not great at it

5. his mechanics cause an accuracy sink that didn’t really show up on his Alabama film too bad

6. he doesn’t have the natural arm talent to overcome it

the most important thing in this video is the guy says that the small things like not leading a receiver, not having feet set, etc are going to be magnified at the nfl level and boy howdy did he call that. 
 

This is basically who he’s always been. So if you’re holding out hope he blossoms into an nfl quarterback, it doesn’t mean going back to what he did at Alabama; it means creating an entirely new quarterback.

And a word on flashing

I see this being mentioned a lot here and other places, and even on national broadcasts, that Bryce is “flashing” what made him the number one overall pick x 2. 
 

what Bryce is doing is not flashing. Flashing is cam just hucking up sixty yard bomb to Steve smith on his first nfl drive. It’s showing something amazing or earth shattering. Something that gives you hope in an otherwise forgettable season.  
 

About 3-5 times a game, Bryce just makes an nfl caliber throw. These are throws I watched Levis make with ease two weeks ago. They’re throws that Joe Flacco can still make. They’re part of a basic route tree that someone like Tommy Devito is practicing. 

 

If this is flashing, he’s showing brief glimpses of competence. These moments are just times he can meet the job requirements. And he struggles to do this even with a good play call, as evidenced by his “bomb” to chark yesterday that was an easy TD if he had any arm strength.  That’s not encouraging.

I was saying the same stuff all along. After I watched him play against Texas in 2022 I knew he wasn’t good. He faced pressure all game and mustered 1 TD drive. It was good enough for Alabama to luckily win the game because Quinn Ewers got hurt in the first half. But it is a mirror image of his NFL career. Young doesn’t look the part, he doesn’t deliver on the field, and he only looked good at Alabama in ideal circumstances.

the alabama propaganda machine is too fuging good. look at how they made the playoffs yesterday over florida state just based off "narratives" lol.

they made bryce look like some football wunderkind meanwhile he's throwing it into double coverage for no reason and looking like a lost child in a mall

if bryce goes to any other school he's a 3rd rounder at best

Dude this is a thing too I just don’t know how to put it into words well. Like we’re absolutely getting sold something every game, even as we see him on the field just not being able to do it.

So many of us said this since before the draft. He’s not, nor never will be, NFL material. Tepper and his sidekick were fooled by a soft spoken sweet kid that can talk football, he just can’t play it at this level.

There was a reason he was my qb3 in the draft and it wasn't just his size. He also took a ton of pressure that he shouldn't have at Alabama. 

 

The reason it was all overlooked is NFL scouts try to get cute and think one trait can overcome a ton of issues in players. With Bryce that was his football mind. Which I question because of the extra pressure he cause while at Alabama.

Makes me question having him as my qb3. Maybe shoulda been qb5 or 6. 

 

I said it before the draft, trading up to #1 meant picking one of two qb's. 

 

AR because his floor is much higher than people think. His footwork is tons better than BY and it shows on tape. 

Or Stroud the player most ready to step in and play.

Its just nuts that his mechanics havent been cleaned up yet.  I mean if a moron like  me from new bern can see it how the fug can his coaches not?

      He is a great guy but a horrible reporter. He makes my skin crawl when I hear his name. I heard that babies cry and dogs attack him when he enters a room. Other than that he is a good dude. Now go burn in hades u sum bit.

      The job just really passed him by. He came up when basically you just needed to get three or four quotes, toss a couple of team provided stats in there, and stretch it out to column length. you got your copy in by 330, out the door by 4, then chill/shmooze the rest of the day. If you were really good you got a book deal. Every now and then you got to write an editorial. The goal of the profession was like Peter King where ostensibly you’re a beat writer for whomever but you get paid to just shoot the poo. now it’s a 24 hour job, you’ve gotta be social media savvy, the pace has increased substantially, you’re expected to produce more than ever, you gotta be able to look through bullshit etc. there’s still risk of industry capture where you just become a mouth piece. Sheena Quick is obviously shameless. I don’t think Newton ever aspired to be more than an inoffensive beat writer, but even that relatively simple role was just more than he was cut out for. its even worse when you’re covering a team that expects the Fourth Estate to act as a PR extension, or considers them on par with buying Twitter bots to promote Bryce. there were over thirty papers that covered the panthers first training camp. In that environment there’s room for boring guys like newton, and they may even be incentivized to push the boundary a little. But today that just isn’t the case and most of the guys are hanging on until retirement (person, gantt) or they’re good and gonna be matched up like Jordan. im not defending the current state of sports journalism, just saying that what counts as a meat and potatoes beat writer passed newton by. He’s retiring well past his sell by date, but that’s pretty common for his generation in general.
