LLEN PARK -- William Clay Ford wasn’t very involved with the Detroit Lions during his final years as owner of the team. Martha Firestone Ford adopted a more hands-on approach when she took over in 2014, and it seems their daughter has been even more involved with team operations.

Sheila Ford Hamp is even sitting in on offensive and defensive meetings heading into the start of free agency on March 17.

People always ask me how much Sheila is involved,” special assistant Chris Spielman said on Tuesday morning during an appearance on 97.1 The Ticket. “Well, Sheila has been involved by being in all these personnel meetings. She’s sat in two days of offensive free agency meetings and defensive free agency meetings.”

Owners have different styles across the league. Some, like Dallas’ Jerry Jones and Jacksonville’s Shad Khan, have given themselves control of roster building. Others, like the late William Clay Ford in Detroit, are never around at all. Martha Firestone Ford was much more active in her years of ownership with the Lions, including dropping in on training camp, attending almost every game, sitting in the draft room, talking to draft picks and potential free agents and so on.

Sheila Ford Hamp has been even more active since taking over for her mother last summer, including firing the general manager and head coach she inherited just five months after taking over the team. She heavily pursued Chris Spielman to join the franchise as her special assistant, and Spielman eventually agreed after a couple interviews with Ford Hamp.

“She’s the one that put me over the top when I was deciding whether to do this or not,” Spielman said. “She’s fabulous. Great leader. She’s a leader to me. I was like, ‘Let’s go!’ Felt like I talked to a head coach before a game. She gave me a locker-room speech, and I was ready to run through the hotel door in Cincinnati.”

Ford Hamp was involved in the subsequent searches for a new general manager (Brad Holmes) and head coach (Dan Campbell), and now she’s sitting in on those guys’ meetings as Detroit prepares for free agency and the draft, which will be critical to forming the backbone of the new approach.

That’s not unheard of around the NFL, and Spielman was very clear that football people like Holmes and Campbell have the final say on all decisions. But it’s certainly a more active ownership approach than we’ve seen in Detroit, as the new owner tries to understand all the nooks and crannies of her organization.

She even took Chris Spielman’s office at the training facility.

“I had an office when I got here, and all of the sudden I’m on the corner next to the exit door,” Spielman told The Ticket. “So what happened? Well, Sheila wants this office because it’s right in the middle of everything, which is awesome. And it just goes to show her commitment and what she wants and how involved she is being in these meetings and giving her opinion, which is fun. It’s cool to see the commitment that she has.”

Owners have the luxury of stepping aside and letting the people they hired do their job, if they hire the right people.  It's that simple...that's all that matters, and you're lucky if you get it right the first time.  The worse your team is performing, the more likely an owner is going to intervene/"meddle".  Which is obviously what anyone should want as a fan, unless you're saying you wish we were heading into Year 5 of Rhule's 7-year plan because Tepper is a good little owner who is entirely hands-off.  I seriously doubt Tepper would be asking Reich to introduce certain plays for Bryce half-way into the season if we were 8-0 and Bryce was on pace to shatter every rookie record.

You guys are looking at the wrong owner if you want an example of someone who is not involved.

She’s just as involved as Tepper. She’s just clearly smarter.

But she’s sitting in on draft meetings giving her opinion, she’s front and center in the draft room, her office is in the team training facility, she goes to practices, all of it.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
