Is Drafting a WR in the 2ND Really A Good Idea?

Recommended Posts

You take the BPA.  TE is not deep. EDGE is not deep. WR is deep. O-Line is deep. There could be some first round talent at WR drop to the second (and we have two high second round picks). That may not happen for O-line. It's not going to happen for TE. Probably not happening for EDGE either. I doubt it happens for CB too.

We have to trust these guys to do it right--not the crackheads who were pulling strings before.  I really do not think they understand talent.

A WR that has good hands and runs crisp routes that gets separation is not going to bust.  Instead, we were drafting players based on 40 times and active heart rates--zodiac signs and college stats--

Morgan is going to be watching a lot of film---that is what he knows and every successful MLB does it religiously.

A rookie WR. They showed with Mingo the concept that inexperience is supposed to mentor inexperience. Interesting.

If you can find a player that fits exactly what the WR room is lacking then okay. Yes. An excellent role player would be good.

With this QB a downfield jump ball guy. Time it out with where the hell they can get to in 2.7 secs and then add flight time for the ball and that is your range. It will almost all be inside 25 yards of the LOS. Find a jump ball guy that can handle that and inside of that.

I am sure I’m off but there has to be a way to quantify what kind of WR can do those things. We do not have  much striking range.

ok ok here me out and stop throwing poo at me.  If the goal is to develop Bryce Young, is brining in a rookie WR the right way to do that or just surround him with good vets?  I'm torn, we need a wr to groom but putting him on the field may hinder Youngs development.

SMH. Just because Fitterer flopped at drafting rookie WRs doesn’t mean a rookie WR will hinder anything. We should be able to get a quality rookie WR in this strong class that can start day 1. Stroud didn’t seem hindered by a rookie WR. Flowers didn’t hurt Lamar and Addison was solid for Cousins especially with JJ out.

We shouldn’t be scared of stuff because our last GM sucked. Still entirely possible we still suck at drafting since we still have the same cogs that were around him. Here’s hoping we learned or that we fired the right guy.

Morgan and Canales know to watch for players who know how to do what they are supposed to do.

How we have been doing things for years going back to even drafting Benjamin and Funchess....they weren't looking at skill and proficiency as much as huge WRs. And then we kind of quit looking at WRs altogether. Well, at least Gettleman wasn't.

With Fitt, instead of size it was that damn RAS score and whatever supermetric they could use. Relying on analytics to tell you who should be drafted. We watched moneyball and fell for that poo.

Morgan trusts his first hand knowledge and those unblinking eyes. He knows what real football players and what makes a guy who can play at a high level because he played with and  against the best for so long.

I think Canales just knows what players have the mentality to push themselves to play at a high level and he can get that to rise to the surface.

I'd take two pass catchers in the second. Don't be constrained to 2 wr. Imagine getting ad mitchell and jatavion sanders (te) in the second. I'd be ecstatic with those two in the 2nd frame. Then go all defense the rest of the draft.

@Rayzor, what else do you think we can/will do realistically in free agency before the draft to shore up the defense?

Does that recent edge signing mean we don't have a shot at clowney/young?

    • The "I'm a better fan" card is getting really old and only serves to pour fuel on these discussions and people who choose to engage in this should reconsider their position or consider whether it is everyone else that is the problem or themselves. Anywho. The same vehement defenses of Bryce Young were also made on behalf of Kyle Allen Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold. Nobody here knows what's going to happen. Nobody here is better than anyone else either. Why? Because no matter what our individual day to day thoughts on the team may be. We are still here.
    • It dawned on me this morning.... that we have a fan base that can't make up it's mind whether they want to be winners or lovers.  Y'all say ya want to be winners, but ya don't act like it.  Beening a fan since before the first game every played by the Panther, I know this fan base lobes us being then underdog.  "We play better as the underdog." Which in of itself is a loser mentality.  No competitor ever wants to constantly be considered the underdog.  Just ask Steve Smith.  This season, this team is literally the ultimate underdog.  Let by a QB that fits the underdog role PERFECTLY.   This fan base should be going hog wild about being an underdog in EVERY GAME we're scheduled to play this season.  Yet, they have already labeled this seasonnas another lost season.  Which it.may end up being, but who the fug really wants that? Seriously???  I personally, want to see our team thrive. I want them to take it to the NFL. I want to see these guys, Bryce included, to step up and show the NFL that not only do they belong,  but they're bringing the fight to the other teams.   Enough of this lover mentality.    Enough with crying over not having the QB we all wish we had (whomever that may be).
