Diontae @ X

Recommended Posts

This is mildly surprising, actually. I know Dionte has a great feel to beat press at the line of scrimmage, but tethering him to the line instead of letting him come off of the line and even go in motion to the slot, limits some of the creativity we can get from him. They must be trying to limit the shots he could take from a linebacker or safety over the middle. Guys like Legette, Polk, and Coleman have the bulk to hold up against those harder hitters. Polk and Coleman have clear slot ability, but Legette seems like an X to me.

I read somewhere where the debate was coming down to Coleman or Legette. If they are projecting past this season? Legette has a true number 1 ceiling. Coleman may only ever be a Z but he could bring that Tee Higgins element to the offense.

IDK man I'm not really sold on Legette getting separation in the NFL. I think at this point I'd rather go Coleman to have that different body type out there

It's easier to get guys open if you send them in motion. Not sure what Canales' tendencies are there, but we were damn near dead last last season when Reich was the play caller and the lack of separation showed. If we do take someone not named McConkey I would expect motion to help assist in getting the players open more consistently.

At least that's what a competent coach would do. Jury's still out on the new guy.

These few days of practice will tell Canales what he needs.  If Mingo has developed and shows signs of being able to play the Z, we could go F or slot WR in the draft--there are some 4 WR sets and this is probably Thielen's last season here anyway.  We could draft 2 as well.  No guarantees Johnson returns for 2025.

Yeah right now he is our X.  He is our best weapon on offense by a good margin.  He played some X in Pitt.  Even if we draft a solid rookie WR, the offense will probably still go through DJ until the rookie develops.

According to ESPN stats, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 24th in the league in motion at the snap, only using it 14% of the time. The team does employ motion before the snap quite frequently, though, as it runs motion %43.7 of the time in general. When asked specifically about motion at the snap, Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales confirmed that it's in Tampa Bay's arsenal and that it can be a big help on offense.

"It's a part of what we're doing," Canales said. "It allows us to stretch the defense horizontally. All you're trying to do is create a moment of indecision for the defense and then that helps the run game, helps the pass game. Switching the responsibilities to create free-access releases at the line, that's a big part of it."

Tampa Bay's low percentage of using this type of play doesn't mean that it won't increase in the future, though. Canales said that while some teams are doing a great job at implementing it in their offense, others like the Bucs are catching up to speed. He mentioned that he first saw heavy usage of pre-snap motion when he was with the Seattle Seahawks and played the Los Angeles Rams twice a year.

"[The Los Angeles Rams] really utilized that from the time Sean [McVay] had been there in LA. It's something that's been around for a while, and I think that the rest of us are learning how to utilize it."

Dionte at X and Theilen at Slot

Just need to find a Z and TE to step up

we really don't need Theilen living in the slot so heavily.  He lowers the ceiling and threat of the offense given how much Bryce likes those throws.  We need youth and speed in the slot that can actually do something with the ball.

I'd like to see Thielen reduced in the slot.

Colemen doesn't separate either.   He basically is a lesser Leggette present day IMO.

idk I don't see Thielen having the speed to work on the outside at this stage of career. he was deadly in the first half of season when he was going against linebackers and nickel corners. but once defenses noticed that and schemed against thielen, he was taken out of the offense. however, thielen is still a reliable receiver and hopefully with the addition of diontae and possible draft picks, we can spread the defense out more

    • I went to Canes games back in '04 & '05 when you were probably still a swimmer waiting to make your dad a father. There was no one there bc they sucked. Some of the lowest attendance in the NHL. As a Panthers fan coming off a SB season (03-04), I couldn't even believe they put a hockey team in Raleigh, and given the attendance, a lot of people speculated they would be relocated somewhere back up north where they would be supported and not "Mayberry." Seriously, educate youself.  That is reality. That being said, comparing that environment to 2024 Canes would be disingenuous. I was at PNC last year and know how great the current environment is. Comparing the current environment at BOA to 10 years ago is just as disingenuous.  Just bc you didn't witness how good BOA is when the Panthers are actually decent doesn't change reality. Seriously, surely you see that coming from such an elitist environment like the globally renowned world-class city of Raleigh, NC... I guarantee you if you went to a Canes game and a Panthers game in 2005, the difference would be unreal bc the Panthers were awesome and the Canes were (at the time) a moribund franchise. I have been in BOA when the whole stadium was rocking. You simply are young, don't know what you're talking about, but want to portray yourself as having knowledge about things you simply don't. You have a lot in common with modern day politicians and televangelists Like I said, Idiocracy has prevailed... Have a great day too!
    • Let it all out bro.   At the end of the day Charlotte fans just aren't that passionate as other fans. The Panthers and Hornets crowds are wack.    Go to a Canes game and you will understand this. Tell the family I said hi and Happy Father's Day.
    • Dude you have no idea what you're talking about. Best place to live?  LMAO... that's your criteria...  Charlotte gets put all over those lists too... come on man... and those lists have zero to do with sports. I'm done after this bc I'm punching down intellectually here... The Panthers have been bad for 6 years now. You are obviously young and not overly educated based off the "dunks" you're putting out there that certainly are, so let me educate you today on the Panthers. The Panthers sold out for well over a decade straight. BOA has been as good an environment as there is when the team is good.  Fan support for the Panthers has been incredible when the team has even remotely reciprocated. The idea that Charlotte doesn't support the Panthers is utter BS. People in Raleigh have the biggest little brother syndrome of all time... Nobody outside of the Triangle cares about any of your "vaunted" sports team outside of Duke-UNC in basketball on a national scale. Sure, the Canes are great. But nationally, the WWE dwarfs the NHL in ratings. More people care about Cody Rhodes than Sebastian Aho... or anyone else in the NHL for that matter... I doubt less than 5% of anyone in this state outside of Raleigh even knows who that is... that's a knock on Aho who is a great player, it's just the NHL barely makes a ripple in the overall hierarchy of American sports. It's not in the same universe as the NFL or NBA no matter how badly you want to tell yourself otherwise. Raleigh is not a big-time sports city, no matter how much you want to scream into the abyss about it. Neither is Charlotte. But no one here is making such a nonsense argument... LOL it's good to be young and to be ignorant enough to be confidently wrong... WTF are you even on this board though since Charlotte is so beneath you? There is an actual discussion board on this very site for Raleigh sports since they are so superior...  Maybe it's bc I'm watching Idiocracy with my son, but your timing is perfect, my man... The dumbest among us have become the most confidence in their ignorance... God Bless America!!
