Panthers Select Trevin Wallace LB - Pick 72, Round 3

Recommended Posts

Honestly had never thought about him so total surprise.

I'm not one that thinks because I don't know something it's not worth knowing so I figure I'd educate myself on him because I might have missed something good.

I think I did. The guy is fun to watch. He's just a fast and violent disruptor more like the tasmanian devil. He's a bit out of control, which I guess is some of the knock on him.

Interviews with him are good. Seems like a really positive young kid. But on the field he's got a bit of insane going on. I've got a lot more to watch, but I can see the appeal.

Brugler had him as the #3 ILB in the draft and a 3rd round grade:

Who were his top two? I’m No draft expert (not even close) but he was my second behind the Mich LB.

That feels like an eloquent definition of "dawg."

From watching film and being a linebacker obsessed maniac for the last 22 years, here's what I can see in the kid.

Pros

- great athlete. Closing speed, ability to cover from hash to hash, can tell he understands the routes coming and likes to undercut them.

- sure tackler. Now granted, I haven't seen a full game to truly judge this, but his form looks fine. He closes and hits and finishes from the clips I have seen, even on backs like Etienne.

- seems to grasp blocking assignments and know generally where to go. When he does see it, he gets there in a hurry.

- seems to enjoy blitzing and gets the fug after QBs

Cons

- doesn't always understand blocking assignments totally and thus, doesn't get downhill like you want to see. This could've been the way they coached their 4-2 as patience is a way to play it, but it's not how I would run a 4-2 (and I did in high school and college). Some may even say his patience is a good thing because that means he's not running himself out of the play and leaving a cutback lane. Bullshit. Linebackers getting downhill fast and violent is the play. Ray Lewis, Dan Morgan, Luke Kuechly, Zach Thomas, Brian Urlacher, all the greats dominated this way. He needs to find that every down.

- unsure on his footwork. He does some hopping and sometimes stops his feet waiting to see where the hole is, and this is bad

- pad level starts really high and in the NFL, this is how you die. RBs are about to be second level consistently fast. He's gotta be more aggressive downhill to solve this pad height issue.

cons seem to be things that are very coachable

Shaq's possible replacement. I know alot of folks were high on Wilson but i can see the logic. Upside is there. Aggressive player. Position of need. Question is there a corner that can help. Is there a center. Do we double dip at WR?  Is TE the move. Who is BPA at this point?

Per usual, most of you hating on this kid have probably never seen him play. Hes the perfect outside linebacker for today’s defense. Needs to get stronger, but great instincts.  Especially in coverage. Hope it works out for us.

He's an inside linebacker

He just turned 21. He needs coaching, but he's also very coachable. And I think we've got some good ones to help him with that.

He's a bit undisciplined, but he's got the speed, power, and natural instincts you want.

They played a 4-2-5, so he was kind of both.

I've seen some call him a weak side LB. I take it you can probably put him anywhere. He can blitz the QB, run down RBs side to side, and cover TEs.

The sideline-to-sideline quickness/ability to cover so much of the field is big in the 2-high shell.  Can ease in for now, but he fits the scheme nicely.
