What is the benefit to benching starters for the preseason?

On what planet does the worst team in the NFL the previous season and over the last 5 years think it’s a good idea to bench starters for all preseason games?

The best teams in the NFL are playing their starters for at least a few drives. But the Panthers are on their 3rd coaching staff in the last 3 years, talking up a “great practice” against the Jets on Thursday as reason to bench starters for preseason games.

I thought the Panthers employed NFL professionals who understood practice reps are not the same as game reps but maybe I am wrong. The Panthers were a dumpster fire in preseason last season so maybe they’re trying to avoid tanking ticket sales worse than they already are or they are intentionally tanking, but who knows.

Carolina needs to know 100% what Bryce can do with a healthy team.  If he is poo, they will look to draft his replacement.  They are giving him every chance without creating an injury excuse for Tepper to utilize.  Bryce stinks it up, Tepper will be on board to drafting another qb.

And they are putting Bryce in a winning situation by not giving him any preseason snaps in the new offense?

hes practiced against the jets all week, exactly what else is he going to show in a few series in a preseason game against them?

I can't wait to see how many botched snaps we have week 1 because Bryce hasn't even taken a snap from Corbert in a game scenario yet. Can't wait for this team to blame it on "rust" when we lost to the Saints in the opener. We're like that ugly girl who thinks they're a queen and then wonder why they can't get a man.

Well hopefully he would show that he has improved at least a little bit.  But it feels like that's the reason he's not out there.  The coach sees them in practice every day.

Injury prevention is the obvious and so far main company line being used.

Which to a point does make sense. If we were a team that has been consistently competing and has been well ran it would sell better to the fanbase.  However we are until proven otherwise the exact opposite.

But if the season doesn't start off well and things look dicey do we sit starters then too? Do we just forfeit the season?

      Former league executive and current NFL.com analyst Marc Ross recently named his top second-year breakout candidates for the upcoming campaign. Ross includes Legette, who may be helped out by his team's latest first-round selection. He writes: Legette had a slow start to his NFL career, catching 49 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns last season. Some of the struggles can be tied to his own growing pains -- he had eight drops on 81 targets, according to Pro Football Focus -- but he had also had to navigate the quarterback shuffle between Bryce Young and Andy Dalton early in Dave Canales' first season leading the Panthers. Canales recently said he believes Carolina has a DK Metcalf-like talent in Legette, who had foot surgery this offseason but was cleared to resume work in early April, and that having a full offseason alongside Young, who took a significant step forward in 2024, could lead to a breakout result in 2025. I anticipate it will also help that Carolina invested another first-round pick in a wide receiver, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, to complement Legette in the pass game. McMillan's presence, however, could take some pressure off Legette—who may be able to roam around in a more natural playmaking role.       my understanding is a big time throw, could be a 5-10 yard slant to Adam Thielen given AT isn't going to separate.
